Without a proper investigation impossible to say but at least superficially doesn't look like the damage was done by or triggered by a very large detonation. Looks far more consistent with a general weakening of the structure and eventual failure.

Well they smashed it up last year according to this video, would certainly weaken it a fair amount.

How odd.

BBC always do this. Their impartiality is well known.

Just because you can do something more difficult doesn't mean that you automatically take the difficult route if an easy one is available.
You would need more specialised explosives experts to be able to undertake the action below the water line to at/above it. It would also be more time consuming / less effective if undertaken below.

How is it impartial? Impartial is stating the dam is damaged, cause unknown.

But no, it was automatically the Russians.

The amusing thing is that it makes me look like I care for the Russians when I don't. I just think it's a laughable situation in which everyone believes everything they are told within 5 seconds of it being a breaking story....

In other news....

Russia is the invader so anything happening is ultimately their fault.

I hope you're not being paid in roubles!

I do wonder sometimes that people forget this.

Russia invaded Ukraine. Raped, killed and took children away from their families.

Amongst destroying eveything that they could. I say "that" as it will soon enough be history imo. A part of history that should never of happened.

And for what?

It's unbelievable in the "modern" world.

Lol honestly.

This is the sort of thing the BBC puts in "Neither Ukraine or Russia's claim has been verified by the BBC."
You cannot get much more impartial than that, especially when the weight of likelyhood falls on the Russians causing it*

"Russia has denied destroying the dam - which it controls - instead blaming Ukrainian shelling."
Damn those Ukrainian shells are so accurate there is literally no damage at all outside the area that has gone.
We know some weapons the Ukrainians have are super accurate, but much of what they have is ex soviet un-accurate level stuff**
Its BS, the Ukrainians were not shelling that dam at all let alone to the level needed to cause it to fail.

* through deliberate or ineptitude.
** by western definition. Accurate by Russian standards seems to be did you hit the city you were aiming at?

One of the saddest parts that often get overlooked about this war, is that when Russia bombard Ukrainian positions they destroy Ukrainian homes, schools, hospitals, etc. And when Ukraine bombards Russian positions back they destroy Ukrainian homes, schools, hospitals, etc. Russia have no problem being cavalier about infrastructure when it's not their infrastructure :(

Satellite photos from a week ago apparently show some damage and then worse a few days ago. It's "possible" that this is not caused by either side but is a result of zero maintenance after earlier damage and a full reservoir. I say again "possible".
Possible, I doubt Russia has prioritised repairing the earlier damage when they don't even repair stuff in their own country until it falls down :(

Russia destroyed it. End of.

It's unclear when exactly the dam was first damaged, but satellite images suggest its condition has deteriorated over a number of days.
A road across the dam appears to be damaged from 2 June, but there does not seem to be a change to the flow of the water until 6 June when the breach of the wall and collapse of nearby buildings can be clearly seen. It is currently unclear whether the damage to the road is linked to the 6 June breach.
