He ran off to St Petersburg as soon as they started heading towards Moscow too. Not a good look.

Putin surrounded himself with incompetent yes men, like most dictators.

People are trying to read some elaborate plot into this when the most likely reason it happened is because a significant portion of the people running the show are incompetent idiots.

Absolutely this. The idea this is some elaborate 4D chess move is utterly illogical. It’s even more of a head scratcher to think they did this to sneak troops about. They could have moved those troops at any time folks.

Putin looks weak
Prigozhin looks weak
Russia has been exposed as weak and divided

If their objective is to make them look weak, then objective accomplished.

I think they don't care, mostly, but there's probably also a side order of not being all that aware of what is going on in Ukraine. It's not like Russian TV is covering their atrocities.

The majority of Russians are just as bad and the minority have been crushed. Decades of honing their population this way.

The aircrew won’tve been some drunken Siberian yokels armed with sticks, they will have been mainly officers with the ability and training to crew complex aircraft.

Seems more likely Prigozhin has been on a three week bender, was more drunk than normal last night, thought ‘I’m the gaffer now‘ and things escalated from there. By late afternoon the hangover had kicked in properly and he thought ‘Ive dropped a right bollock here’ and is now trying find a house in Belarus without any windows.
