I’m not sure how secure Russian airspace is, past its not half as secure or capable as I expected. It would be great if the Ukrainians could slip in and out undetected but it isn’t crucially important for success.

I’d expect once shot down the bomber would be escorted. That alone is a massive win.

Any plane flying into Russian airspace is gonna have so many radars pointing missiles and guns at it that it will get shot down... Especially an old thing like an f16. Like others said. You might get away with it for a few hours until people wake up and do their jobs.
Don't you think the exact same for Russian aircraft flying deep into Ukraine airspace protected by modern missile defence?

Well yeah its a tricky one as its certainly possible they are not active in this regard.
Although my gut feel is an F16 flying over Russia when they have bombers up would be one of the few times they would be used (outside airshows)

Maybe Mig31s would be used instead/as well?

Anyway this is I believe not going to happen anyway. I suspect Ukraine have been told, like for some other weapon systems, to specifically not use them to attack Russian "soil"

Escort where?

As said they are launching well within Russian air space, and are sited well back from the front lines.
They got moved from most accounts.

They tend to be known to be in the air but never get close to Ukraine.

There will be numerous bases equipped with fighters much closer to Ukraine than these ever get so why would they need escorts.
They aren't bombing, they are aerial missile platforms.

Interceptions have mostly been with SU-27s with some SU-35s patrolling as well. They often have AWACS up, but unlike the West they are rarely seen on ADS-B or similar - partly because they are actually being utilised in active combat missions.

The S-300 and 400 systems are a bit of a wildcard as they rarely have them properly spun up for a variety of reasons and there are complications with doing so but they are capable systems as well as capable of going spectacularly wrong. If Ukraine did start pushing offensively they'd almost certainly have to bring those systems fully online and move up more Pantsir, etc. systems.

If Ukraine did get through and hit them they'd almost certainly get higher priority air cover and possibly escorted as a precaution in case something got through in future - they've flown them with fighter bombers before (when they were also launching missiles).
