I absolutely don't condone Russia's actions but to me, this is just two corrupt, power hungry organisations who have a complete distrust of one another fighting over the Ukraine.

The difference is, Russia is happy to use it's military might to get it's point across, whereas the EU would rather scurry around behind the scene, leeching money from countries and using it to feed it's fat cat leaders.

I expect the only possible outcome here is that Ukraine is carved up - Crimea and the rest.

Ukrainian people should have waited for elections to elect a pro EU president. Not decide they don't like the decision of not signing an EU agreement by immediately cause uproar and oust their serving president.

That's chaos and has brought upon this mess.

Indeed. Having armed men storm the administrive building and remove the currently elected president was not a good idea and has given Russia the perfect excuse to wade in .

there was no threat to the russian people of crimea

If the Russian's were not there then the new Ukrainian government would have slapped down Crimea's aspirations for independence and replaced the pro-Russian Crimean government with a pro EU one. That would have been bad for the mainly Russian population of Crimea.

I don't like the idea of Russia or America or anybody walking into a country to "defend the rights of the people". However having said that, I have little doubt that if Crimea was defenceless then the new Ukrainian president would have followed through with his intent to regain control of it and make sure it remains part of Ukraine. Which would be bad for the vast a majority of the people in Crimea.

I think Russia's action's while not necessary good, were the least worst course of events to unfold for Crimea.

Its like if our government said "no your not having an EU referendum" and a bunch of demonstrators cause mass protests and oust our coalition over it.

That's not the right way to do things. Yet BBC and Sky News never talk about what caused the mess.

So basically, the media has got themselves into a massive frenzy because Russia has sent troops in on the Ukrainian Presidents (the ousted one) order, and saw the ones over the border doing war games, thinking they were going to go in next, when actually they weren't. Plus, the Ukrainians were saying that Ivan said they were going to attack at 3am this morning, and that didn't happen, which Ivan said they werent going to do.

Its all balls... everything that is being reported is just guff and speculation. Talk about hype hype hype.

Media are loving it and seemingly blowing it out of proportion. As usual.

No it's not like that at all.

It's like the UK Govt. saying no to having an EU referedum, followed by months of mass protests in sub freezing temperatures and then close to 100 people gunned down in the streets like animals along with footage showing snipers casually picking targets and pulling the trigger. If you honestly think any Western Govt. would get away with acting in this manner, you are crazy.

That being said, crazy is not the best diagnosis here. A more accurate one is "Ooo look at me as I criticise my Govt/media, comparing them to autocratic regimes/media, while I enjoy freedom, democracy and wealth. Down with The West!".

Highlights from President Putin's news conference which has now ended:

  • Events in Kiev amount to an anti-constitutional coup
  • Former President Yanukovych has no political future
  • Russian forces have not taken part in operations in Crimea
  • Russia is not thinking of annexing Crimea
  • Threat of sanctions from the West is counter-productive
  • Russian actions in Ukraine are in accordance with international law
  • Russia will not recognise the outcome of upcoming presidential elections in Ukraine if the current "terror" continues

To be honest, and I didn't think I would ever be saying this, I am with Russia on this one.

The western powers are sounding incredibly stupid/hypocritical at the moment.

You don't know what the truth is there, you cannot rule out the protests were getting out of hand and protesters started to be aggressive shooting police first.

Who knows what triggered it.
