I honestly cant see how Europe is going to avoid getting heavily involved in this. The moment Russia start shelling cities I can not see any world leader standing by and just letting it happen.

Russian MOD is going after the whole 'Zelenskiy said they'll create nuclear weapons' at Munich Meeting. I said it was such a dumb move by Zelenskiy.

Right now while speaking to the staged Putin meeting.

Well, if he can develop them on Mars or on the Moon, then maybe he has a chance, but I'm pretty sure on planet earth as it stands they have about 0.1% chance of being able to without it being turned into a man made crater.

So from watching Russian security council meeting the message here for the populace and the west is that Russia is going to recognise independence Donbas republics. This probably means formal entry of Russian forces into the territory, which is de jure invasion of Ukraine. Doesn't look like they will go for Kyiv but it all depends on Ukrainian response when Russian forces will formally enter Donbas as opposed to supporting separatists informally/covertly.

That is debatable, because Ukraine does not recognize separatists. They say its Russian army in Donetsk anyway. So if Russia officially moves their troops inside Donbas - from Ukranian POV quite frankly nothing has changed. Its quite an interesting situation.

why do people think russia is a push-over force when the war starts?

why do people think the west forces aren't just farces?

why do poeple think the west holds some kind of edge (a massive one) over Russia and its allies that we can somehow end it like Thanos....

demented comments and mentality. rings true of over optimism suffered during WW1.

I had no idea Russia was so open to parts of a country simply ceding and declaring themselves a republic! How noble of them to help these breakaway provinces get up on their feet.

Well I don't see a single western media report on this issue in any broad fashion. It's as if Zelenskiy never said it during Munich speech. The only people discussing it are Russian and Ukranian media.

So it does not exist.

Economically the west holds absolutely immense force. USA GDP of 25 trillion and EU 17 trillion against Russia's 1.7 trillion.

Long term economically the west can leverage that soft power to contain Russia. Long term Ukraine can get strong enough to retake lost territories....if US/EU approves such a move.

Which is probably what he has been after all along.

The back channelling has probably been about trying to get Ukraine to suck it up and not go to war in those areas (as in against "proper Russia" not sepratists).

Demanding Ukraine not join NATO because once those areas are declared independant (sort of) it's one less reason for Ukraine not to join.

For my own part, I don't want Ukraine to be used as a buffer between East and West. All that does is cause the country and its people to be used and abused by both sides. As slow as it has been, there has been progress in dragging the country away from corruption. With no real future other than effectively being a DMZ, it will fall back into extreme levels of corruption.

It's like he's rounded up the who's who of Russian political power and pushed/paraded them in front of the camera to get, on the record, their support for what he's about to do. If it fails, they will all fail with him.

Official Ukraine does not recognize Separatists. They consider Donbass officially occupied by Russian army and only Russian army. Why would they need to bend Ukraine to not go to war when Russian Army moves into Donbas? If their stance was that since 2015 Russian army has been there.

Once again, Ukraine does not recognize existence of separatism. To them, its Russian army.
