I read the Duma were putting pressure on Putin (as much as "coming cap in hand" to the boss can be seen as pressure) to declare those areas independent.
Just need to think of a way for Zelinsky to sell it to the Ukrainians, this is the least worse option. Although I also read Zelinsky is bank rolled by some oligarch that hates Putin with a passion (dude looks like an old friendly English teacher) so I doubt his masters are going to want him to be seen to be capitulating.
No it is people like putin.
Avoiding immediate conflict would be great - but this may open another front elsewhere if this nonsense is accepted.

Look at utter failure of cold war that ended in total collapse of USSR and now majority of Eastern Europe being free.

i would rather go into a war with a general who doesnt want war and have very persimistic view on his own position and plan accordingly than a general who think he will crush the enemy with ease and overly optimistic.

Declaring ALL Donbass as such would not be off ramp at all and subject Russia to every single sanction as if they invaded WHOLE UKRAINE.
It makes Zero sense to take path of action you’re suggesting.
I also find it funny that you and other media outlets have taken this and are running with it. Out of what 20 people, one of them decided to say this - was quickly struck down by Putin.
Yet we're presenting this as official Kremlin stance now.
At the same time, Zelenskiy saying that Ukraine will exit Budapest Memorandum and therefore imply that they will seek nuclear weapons creation - crickets, zero coverage in western media.

Honest question and not being funny, can you explain the difference?
I assumed Putin was looking at Donesk, Luhansk and Crimea to being into the fold. Is the Donbass region more than these areas?
I also assumed the West would struggle to justify getting involved if it was just these areas - as they are geuinely contested by those that live there.
Except I wasn't talking about the guy who got rebuked. That chap said those regions should become part of Russia. No, the guy I was talking about was saying when they declare independence they should have their original borders. Putin didn't say anything about that.
Only small parts of Donetsk and Luganks are occupied by separatist (Russia, depending who you ask). Per USA/NATO stance etc, as long as Russia sticks to those areas there will be no further sanctions. Declaring all Donbass would mean further incursion into Ukraine.
Regarding hot wars I completely agree.
I meant more of a cold /economic war. Sanctions. I do not even consider hot war between great powers/peers a possibility at this point, perhaps wrongly.
The chap that was spanked was the one who said WHOLE Donetsk and Luhansk regions should be recognized - not within their current borders. He was the one who was spanked. I watched it live on RT translated.
Not close enough it seems. The stream is still up - he went off message about saying they should be part of the Russian federation after spluttering an answer Putin didn't like. Putin told him that's not what they are talking about, yet.
The guy I was talking about came straight after and said they should be independent and with their original borders. He was thanked and told to go back to his seat. Go look for yourself. Don't think a livestream can have timestamps linked.
