The upgraded version, I believe referred to as Izdeliye 51 (not sure if it is the 51 or 53 with enhanced range), has a range of approx. 70km.
That would still need to be fired right on the contact line to reach the airfield which seems dubious to me. More likely they somehow managed to smuggle them behind the lines.

In Sudan?, really? I'd have thought Ukraine has more concerns closer to home.

Plenty of countries with more significant interests in the area I'd have suspected before Ukraine.
Probably more to do with getting justice on those people they murdered in and around Bakhmut. Ukraine is putting terrorists on notice that their not safe to walk around freely anywhere on the planet.

I'm sure they'd like to - but they really do have their hands full.

I'd suspect another Sudanese group, Israel, France, China, USA or even Russia themselves before Ukrane.

Ukraine is attacking local militia troops in African countries to get revenge on Russia?

This is an absolute nonsense story.

This is an absolute nonsense story.

This seems to be the sum of the evidence:

CNN's investigation did not find conclusive proof that Kyiv was behind the operation, but did obtain video footage showing "the hallmarks of Ukrainian-style drone attacks."

The strikes began on Sept. 8, two days after the Wagner mercenary organization sent several trucks loaded with weapons to an RSF garrison. Drones deployed in at least eight of the strikes were the same as those widely used by Ukrainian forces, and the drone controller featured Ukrainian text.

I wonder. Would Ukraine be willing to sell drones to third parties?

Pretty sure you can order all the bits from AliExpress.

'Blame it on Ukraine' seems like a handy get out clause for someone looking to go undercover. Why would there by Ukranian writing on an ESC if you weren't trying to scapegoat someone else.

That is possible.

Drone proliferation, and deniability, is going to lead to some real fun in the next few years.

I can't see Kyiv wasting their time, resources and people on going after Wagner group in Sudan. There's so much footage out there its more likely someone just copied the tactics.

I do like the idea that Ukraine's reach is that far though :D

Local militia forces backed by Wagner. We know Wagner are there they haven't exactly been keeping it a secret, just because your hiding out in some war torn African nation doesn't mean your out of reach and people won't come after you for the many crimes you've committed. They had this coming, it was fully deserved and Ukraine was right on spending it's time and resources to locate and liquidate them (wait until after the war there's a good chance the SFU will have lost track of these individuals).

Ah ... I misunderstood as Wagner were mentioned in the quotes. Even less reason for Kyiv to be involved then - why the hell are they going to care about militia groups in Sudan ffs !

Because for "Wagner-backed" you can read Russian proxies. Wagner is a means for Russia to project power in Africa and built a network of influence by supporting certain allies.
