Alternatively, a lot of Western European countries have been taking US military support for granted and haven't been spending what they agreed to spend on defence, countries like Germany are essentially letting US tax payers subsidise their defence spending while they're free to spend more on social programs, how is that fair on US tax payers? No I know, orange man bad.

Yeah, some hadn't met targets but almost all were showing increased spending year by year after coming out of the worst financial crisis in decades. So yeah, orange man bad. He throws a tantrum and threatens the integrity of the whole organisation which his own people had to talk him out of. He had no idea the consequences doing something like that would have, he's a incompetent. Or if he did he'd be at best criminally corrupt.
And are you naïve enough to think US defence spending would fall if some baltic states or Germany spent a bit more on their own, national militaries?!

Correct me if I'm wrong but what good would those reserves be if they can't raise money from them in the market? I think, and again can stand to be corrected, but sanctions would probably have minimal effect on the average russian but may really hit the elite of society. Which would be perfect for trying to snap them out of this path.

The worlds financial system isn't just America. Plenty of countries would be willing to buy those commodities. Plus they can just issue debt, like i said, one of the smallest debt to gdp percentages in the world, there is plenty of wiggle room for them

Ukraine holds no strategic significance for the USA. Divide and conquer at its finest. Ukraine and Russia locked in a perpetual conflict which stunts progress for both countries whilst USA sweeps in to fill Russian gas hole with their LNG. Everything to gain and nothing to lose. Europe reaps higher energy prices, Ukraine and Russia in perpetual conflict. USA reigns supreme.

Yes, but they don't have the facilities built as yet, we do but at least Germany does not, they will have to rapidly build up infrastructure to support LNG which will have resistance because LNG is not exactly pleasing to the green crowd (It takes energy to liquify natural gas + all the logistics etc). But yeah, at this rate Russia could just as easily turn off the gas so I think they are pretty much kaput at this rate.

Dude, I understand you've got a personal stake in this. If I did I'd probably want the same too. But a move like that would play into Putin's grubby hands. They'd be able to herald that everything they've said about Ukraine being a western puppet was true.

It is standard practice to put peace keepers in place to stop conflicts that would mean civilian casualties like this.

What is the difference here?

Those targets are like the actual minimum though, Germany should be spending more because they can afford to. What would the consequences have been exactly, Russia wouldn't roll T80's into Europe regardless of the US being there or not, Putin may want to retake some Russian speaking provinces of the former USSR but he doesn't want to occupy Poland and Berlin. US would be able to pivot more effectively to South East Asia to focus on China and North Korea instead of baby sitting Western Europe against a fairly impoverished Russia.

Ban the Russian elite from universities and owning property in the West.

It's the UN that do that and they're toothless since Russia is a member. Those other places didn't involve the potential escalation of war with the worlds biggest nuclear power.

Trump came close to imperilling Nato by genuinely raising the prospect of the US pulling out of it to his staff. Anyone who thinks he'd be good in any way shape or form during this needs their head looking at.

oh yea?

What do those criticising Biden want? Do you want to go to war with Russia?

Personally I'd like to see far more severe sanctions by the US, EU and UK. Freeze the assets of all Russian oligarchs, seize them if that doesn't work. I don't want war though. Putin clearly has his plan for expanding Russia to take in states he felt should never have been allowed to leave. If he attempts to take a NATO nation then it will be war and should be war. I feel for the Ukrainians, they are screwed. We have to make the price Putin and Russia pays hurt that much that he rethinks this. Sanctioning a few of the smaller banks won't do it.

All in good time I'd imagine.

Nato have and are currently conducting peace keepers operations around the world.

Including and not being limited to Kosovan, enforcing no flt zone over Libya

Yea, that'll really stop Putin. wtf

Seizing those properties and banning them from any purchases or even entering Western countries will hurt them. That alone won't do it but its one measure. Its not Putin that can be pressured its the oligarchs that can and they can pressure him if they are made to hurt badly enough. If we are aware of any of Putin stolen wealth hidden in the West then that should also be frozen.
