Its all good and well, but it could take weeks to gather, kit up, arm and mobilise any reserve force. Russia could be at the Polish border by the time any of those reserves get their hands on a rifle if Russia had any desire to do so.
They have been prepping them since last year from what I’ve seen. They hadn’t formally called them up until now.

It actually might. There are only three things that will stop Putin. Guaranteed

- long rifle and experienced gunman
- his own generals dragging him out to the street so the cheering crowd can lynch him
- angry oligarchs and mafia.

Any of which he deserves. Let's be honest about it, the man is a psychopath and megalomaniac.

Freezing accounts, wealth and property of all Russian citizens in the West with immediate repatriation under "your mad leader is about to invade a sovereign country under pretence of 'some Russians living there for a while', since we don't do wars anymore in civilised Europe, as much as we love ya - you have to return temporarily back to mother Rus cause we don't want him to mistake Chelsea for Donietsk" clause.
I think that would very quickly achieve at least one of those things in the first paragraph.

You've got to remember Europe is reliant on Russian gas as well, that plays into all of this. I think this will turn out just like Crimea, only thing that will stop whats happening is proper war, but the EU and America isnt going to war over people who are Russian living in eastern Ukraine

The problem is, that part of Ukraine are Russians, they all speak Russian and think themselves as Russian.

A good chunk of Birmingham and some northern cities speak Hindi. Shall we let them become part of India? ;)

They were all very happy to become independent back in 1991 and didn't want to be part of Russia then, 55% of ethnic Russians voted for independence. The 2014 referendum results were as rigged as Russian presidential elections.

Seizing private property because it belongs to people who are friends of people that you don’t like is very Soviet of you, Comrade.

Oligarchs are part of the corrupt Russian system that keeps Putin in power. They all pay homage to him. We've frozen their assets before, you don't think we should go after those that work with him?

Thing is, artillery and big bombs will crush civilian reservists quickly both physically and mentally.

Latest scenes from Crimea:

By all accounts dozens of concentrations like that - very difficult (not impossible) to wage asymmetric war against that kind of setup in the open regions of Ukraine as they'll recon with drones to call in precise fire.

Hopefully we don't find out but if they tried to Grozny any Ukrainian cities would the Russian people balk at it? Ukraine is a lot bigger and populace and the internet being what it is it won't be hidden from view.

Let's be honest the only way you can take out Russian artillery is with counter batteries or airstrikes.

Ukraine won't be able to get their planes up to delivery the necessary fight back so the Russian artillery will fire unimpeded.

I wonder what would happen if they all wanted to be a part of India, I guess I wonder the same of Northern Ireland. If the vast majority of Northern Ireland decided that they dont want Northern Ireland to be part of the UK anymore, would we try to stop them?

I suppose in some ways thats the Scotland referendum for independence scenario, if Scotland were to vote for independence, would we allow them independence or refuse it
