Russia gave Ukraine the Crimiea, now they want it back?

Technically, they "gave" it to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (which basically belonged to Russia), not Ukraine. It's a bit like putting assets in your wife's name for tax purposes, then she divorces you and keeps them.

The people of Ukraine have asked for help from the West so should we turn our back on them? If the Falkland Islands were invaded by Argentina, and the poeple living there asked us to protect them should we turn our backs on them?

The difference is though that the people of Crimea don't want to be part of Ukraine, they want to either join or create stronger ties with Russia, not the EU.

& please read a few of Sliver's previous trolls before leaping to defend him, he appears to have some kind of issue with me personally  :(

Not just you. He described me as '...not very erudite' in an earlier post. Furthermore, he also managed to come to the conclusion that I watch daytime TV. He is a sharp one.

The Falklands is a British oversea territory so completely different. Not to mention the people of Crimea asked for russias help and the first thing the new Ukrainian government need was target them with legislation. So no where near as straight forward as you are trying to make out.

Even if it was as straight forward as you are trying to paint of course we shouldn't just help any country that asks for it. Libya is a lovely example of that

Not been following this story, don't know jack **** what's going on but just wondering is there any chance of a nuclear war? after all I did see somat about the Russians testing ICBM's

As has been said, it is not quite that simple. The 'on the face of it' excuse for the russian invasion was to protect ethnic russians in crimea from the new government, on the basis that they were extreme anti-russian nationalists. Whatever the reality (and there were some minority far-right parties involved, who now have some representation in the new government) there was also some agitation in the East by pro-russians there for something similar to happen, so its a bit of a country divided.

The Falklands on the other hand have a totally British population. If they were majority argentinan and argentinia invaded, whether we would intervene would be highly debatable and i would say not.

Nope. Not unless the Koreans start one. The russians are always testing missiles and they called up the americans beforehand.

The fault in Ukraine is not Russia’s, it is the US’. The US is the one who organized, financed and provoked the coup, and the US was incompetent and lost control of the coup to the ultranationalists who threat to the Russians in the Crimea. So, it is purely normal for the Russian government to react as Ukraine is not an area of the United States’ strategic interests, Paul Craig Roberts, former Assistant Secretary of the US Treasury and a contributor to Global Research, told the Voice of Russia.

Ouch, lol.

I honestly think the best for Ukraine would be to consolidate itself into Russia. Nay for it's citizens at first buy yay in the long term; joining the EU would kill it's economy as all of it's trade is with Russia. Consolidation would mean they could sell direct to customer too.

Also, why haven't the US invaded Ukraine yet? They have oil and gas...oh wait because unlike Iraq they are still scared of Ukraine's neighbour!

I am not pro-EU by any means, but compare the GDP of The Ukraine (non-EU) and Poland (EU). Both started at roughly the same level in 1990. Based on that evidence alone, you ought to realise membership of the EU would massively improve the Ukrainian economy.

If you're still in any doubt, consider Belarus. They have been pretty much swallowed up by Russia and how are they doing?

All the eastern nations who joined the EU experienced a huge boom in their economy. Those that didn't join remain in the gutter.

No rational person could argue that joining Russia with an economy on par with Italy could be a better choice than joining a trading bloc the size of the EU.

According to a popular red top paper this morning the UK is still providing the Ruskies with £86m in high tech weaponry and gadgets.

Oh the shame! No wonder the Government does not was to start putting sanctions in place against Russia.

But Poland does not have nuclear reactors built to Soviet spec and not EU spec (making them worthless) or trade with Russia which is not to EU standard.

The reason Ukraine would not do well in the EU is because it would cost them billions just to replace their technology to EU standard before they could trade with any EU country. Poland is not in that scenario.

Make sure your tin foil hat is shaped as a pyramind and it's aligned with the Earth's magnetic field or you lose all the protection it provides.

Oh I'm sorry I forgot that everything reported by Russian news sources including their interviews with former US officials is just make believe according to you. Here perhaps you would like some nice unbiased, propaganda-less US headlines:

Ukraine Crimea Crisis: Ukrainian Police Evacuate Donetsk Government Building

See much more rounded, they have kindly used force to evacuate the pro-Russian protesters that were occupying the building and stopped to raise the Ukrainian flag while they're at it, how nice.

You do realise Poland is a former communist country that went through the changes you've just mentioned, right? Poland and Ukraine were very similar in the late 80s.

And they would have plenty of time to get themselves up to spec, plus funding from the EU. Do you not think all the former Soviet nations were in a similar predicament?

The Russian market is approximately the size of ITALY, the rouble remains very weak and their economy is faltering due to an over-reliance on energy exports, in particular oil. Given that Iraq and Iran are planning to flood the market, oil prices will go into free-fall in the latter half of this year.

Do you SERIOUSLY think turning East is going to help the Ukranian economy?

Also, why haven't the US invaded Ukraine yet? They have oil and gas...oh wait because unlike Iraq they are still scared of Ukraine's neighbour!

Would having very recent painful experience of invading places where the locals don't want US/NATO forces "protecting" them be a factor?

The US is pretty much self-sufficient in energy now, so why would oil and gas be a motive for US intervention?

And it should be obvious that EVERYONE is afraid of a US/RU war, because the potential for us all to be turned to ash in a nuclear war would go up sharply. That doesn't mean Russia can act with impunity; if they were attacking a NATO nation, it's fairly certain conventional forces would be attacking the Russian military.

Photo purportedly showing a "Crimean militiaman" who forgot to remove his name tag. Apparently there's a bloke with the same name in a Russian GRU military intelligence unit. What an amazing coincidence.

FAO areksexylady - this is sarcasm.

Not doubting you, but does Russian military intelligence list employee names on FB or something? and how many people in Russia have unique names? again not doubting but on the info given it sounds a bit lolworthy.
