well according to some retired generals, russian doesnt have enough troops in place to hold ukraine, it will take it easily, but holding is another matter

You clearly have little understanding of nuclear weapons. For starters, Russia can take Ukraine quite easily with conventional weapons.

Nuclear weapons, even ‘small’ ones, cause far reaching damage.

I think there is a possibility it will be an initial win and then it will descend into a long guerrilla war.

If he starts using nukes in Europe then its WW3 and civilisation is over. One does not simply throw out a 'small tactical nuke' and that is the end of things.
 
I just dont understand. Why is putin trying to invade Ukraine?

Has Ukraine done something terrible to russia?

Are Ukraine a threat to them in other ways such as financial gains or become the new easter europe super power?

Does Ukraine posses unlimited resources that russia are lacking? What?

I think the plan is not to hold it as Russia but as a puppet state like Belarus, Khazakstan, not technically Russia but ruled by a Russia aligned stooge, don't forget that Ukraine wasn't up in arms being under Putin's thumb prior to 8 years ago, things only change when the West got involved and decided it time to put a Western aligned puppet in charge
