I didn't realise how old he was. He's at my parents age and I absolutely wouldn't want them in charge of anything important

IMO yes. The west has always been hostile to Russia and always will (and vice versa).

Similarly I would be concerned if the UK was surronded by a bunch of countries that were buddy buddy with Russia or China (and would happily house any of their military equipment).

Nobody has the stomach for a head on war and all we can do is keep stuff at a stalemate. The west tried to get close to Ukraine and close off Russia. Russia responded preemptively.

Weird situation with those Turkish A400M's that arrived last night. I thought at first that these would be delivering weapons from Turkey to Ukraine, seeing how the Ukrainians already operate Bayraktar TB2 drones, and have more on order, so that these could have been making an expedited delivery from Turkey. Then I saw reports that these A400M's were actually under Russian control, with a contingent of Russian special forces aboard offering safe passage to take Zelensky and his entourage out of Ukraine and into exile in Turkey. Then there were reports of a firefight breaking out and explosions at Borsypil Airport, and nothing more about it after that.

Really odd situation, does anyone else know any more about this?

Was weird how everything kicked off after they landed - but reports I've heard is they weren't under Russian control but were offered as a way of safe passage if Zelensky would go into exile... but who knows. Very concerning if they were under Russian control.
