"EU unlikely to cut Russia off SWIFT for now, sources say - Reuters News", news from 20mins ago (09:55 UK Time)

See this sort of thing is why he keeps pushing, totally weak response.

Should be severe sanctions for this - their foreign minister appears to have a very expensive house in London... how is that still not repossessed?

Various EU countries demanding special exemptions from sanctions:

It's things like this that make me question their willingness to abide to the NATO treaty if one member was attacked, I really hope NATO isn't put to the test because it isn't ready, they want freedom, they want everyone to live with freedom but when push comes to shove, they're not prepared to pay the price, this is why Putin doesn't care about sanctions

Cyberwar looks pretty though

He is a mad man though? There isn't much to understand here, this is just Russian imperialism. There was no threat of invasion by Ukraine or NATO, he just wanted Ukraine back in the Russian sphere of influence, he views Ukraine a few other countries as satellite states which owe their allegiance to Russia that's all.
He might as well be mad and in that case the West should have been EXTRA careful on the delicate matter of Ukraine but instead they played right into his hands.

Russia being massive can basically do what they want around that area and indeed do what they want. The only possible outcome here is Ukraine becomes a Belarus style satellite Russian state and that will be that for the foreseeable future.

Putin loyal Russians owning half of London yet this UK government very unlikely to sanction anyone that matters
Well what would it matter sanctioning a Russian that lives in the UK and is rich, for example Chelsea owner is very rich an Russian giving him a sanction achieves what exactly?

I actually think I agree with what west is doing so far. We can't do much.

I don't think we could have gone into Ukraine
I don't think we have many sanctions but I do feel we have to spread them out
I think the red line is NATO country being pulled in.
I hope putin hasn't completely lost it.

As horrendous as it is. Ukraine really is a sacrifice to prevent something global.
I'm not sure if it's right. And I would hope if Russia was nukeless we would be going in.

It's a fine line as we aren't dealing with someone rational.

You send trained negotiators in with terrorists. This is terrorism. But this terrorist has an arsenal of nukes.

How this is a thing in Europe in 2022 is unimaginable. Even a few weeks ago.
I wish we could help Ukraine. Its absolutely horrendous. I cannot imagine what it's like there.

Russia is an oligarchy, Putin is in power in part because various other rich and powerful people support him. If they face direct consequences for his actions then that might shape their future decisions.

Seeing reports that Russian casualties and loss of equipment is racking up. Ukraine is fighting back hard.

Hopefully. Easier to defend than to attack and they’ve had plenty of notice. We’ve also been arming them for months.

If Putin doesn’t manage this now he’ll never get another chance.

More this unfolds more concern I have it may not stop with Ukraine.

I don't know. I'm just getting this mentally unstable vibe from putins outward broadcasts
All bets are off the second a nato country is attacked. Not a road we want to go down. If he stops at Ukraine then the west can stop at strong words and lots of tutting, whilst muttering 'thank **** for that' under their breath.

So depressing all this. My best friends auntie, Uncle and grandparents are from the Ukraine and live on the border. The auntie managed to get out but the rest too stubborn.

Just a awful situation to be in.

A person like putin who clearly isn't bothered by sanctions, fines whatever you want to call them will just fight with weapons.

The West are hoping this will work, you can't talk to some one who doesn't want to talk. It's literally like taking a sword to a gun fight.

Yep.
He'd have to be certified crazy to attack a NATO country. But he maybe.
That would be game over. Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable how this can happen from our perspectives so Quickly

Or, god forbid, the people of Ukraine wanted closer ties to the West? Heaven forbid they think for themselves. I haven't seen any mass protests since, have you?
Are you telling me that it was the people of ukraine that wanted to join Nato? really?
You think the west had no involvement in Ukraine prior to all of this?

It's amazing how many pro Putin idiots have come out of the woodwork, just like him they are all crazy fools.
Seeing things from another viewpoint doesn't automatically make you a supporter of them. Then again most people seem to struggle with understanding that concept these days.

Leaving aside the questionable accuracy of these claims, how does any of it justify Russia's invasion of Ukraine? Shouldn't Putin be attacking us instead?
I technically didn't say that. I try to also view things from other parties viewpoint rather than act like everyone who disagrees with me is a lunatic with no "logical" train of thought.
There is benefit from trying to understand other viewpoints so that you can understand how a situation arose and properly take steps to avoid it in future. As funny as it may seem to go "haha putin crazy" it is not helpful.

I think the west played with fire and tried to expand their influence and Ukraine got burnt. I also think there are benefits to having multiple superpowers that keep each other in check.

P.S. Where do you think my claims are wrong so i know for future reference?
P.S.S What do you think Russia should do while the west expands their influence? Should they roll over and take it?

If Russia went after Lithuania instead of Ukraine do you think the wests response would be any different to what it is now?
