Absolutely. I was purely commenting on the scale of warfare not the effectiveness.Also how they're used.
The example of the Somme is a bit extreme as they were basically being used to blanket a huge area constantly, so far the Russians are the only ones who seem to be doing that in Ukraine (and even they are having to take breaks to conserve ammo), whilst the Ukrainians seem to be doing specific targeting for short periods of time and probably do more in military terms with a couple of dozen rounds than the Russians are with tens of tons.
The British bombardment was largely ineffective. For a start a significant number of shells were anti-personnel shrapnel which were useless against the German bunkers where all the soldiers were hiding.
