Unlock your ATI 6950 to a 6970 Thread

Are you serious? Did you think they haven't thought of the option of unlocking the card before?
Like they didn't think of having to file down one of the 8pin connectors on 6970's, and thus had to suffer two weeks release delay because of it?

Yep I'm pretty serious. This hack makes ATI's top card pretty much redundant (as has already been said by many people in this thread).

Watched this tread last night, quite supprised not many have flashed yet.....or admitted to it here ;)
As mentioned before "supprised it took people so long" quite sure W1zzard had this worked out the in the first 10 mins He saw the card, be intresting to know if He was asked not to be vocal about it for a couple of weeks ? ;)

For me I would like to know what all this dual bios business is about as I have not been impressed with ATI's bios and powerplay for a while !
That aside good move by them because even though 90% will never mod it will add Kudos to an otherwise un spectacular card.

Next thing will be an announcement that future cards will be locked....result all current stock will fly off the shelves :D

Who thinks the 6950's will now see a price rise soon (excluding the January VAT bump)? ATI are not going to like this.

I think shops will look to lower HD6970 prices a little more than they would have. But TBH I don't think it will make much difference because of the massive availability. Prices will fall on both cards over the next month or two IMO.

Easy, i noticed you are running the older drivers( 8.79 or something, 10.11 catalyst) while i am on a newer set (8.801, 10.12a catalyst) which i think are the prefered drivers. Any chance you can install the newer drivers and see if you get even more of a boost?

TPU did a review and found the 8.79 driver to be better. Personally I found those drivers to be best as well.

I'm sorry, but a damn minor mod like that will not delay a card for 2 weeks FFS.

AMD have stated it doesn't affect the retail batch anyway and it only affected the initial test run in the factory, and those are the cards they send to reviewers so they get them before everybody else.

The final assembly of the card will be done by hand in a factory, that little nick off the plastic would take literally 1 second with a hot pen that is at EVERY final assembly work station in an electronics factory.

Wat?

Like I've mentioned before,
What bios could be loaded on a 6970 then ?
Amd have killed their 6970 sales I reckon

Is this working for people that have a HIS 6950? Was thinking of getting a couple...

I believe the HIS 6950 is the version which has been flashed the most so far. Besides, all 6950's are the same except for the stickers and the ASUS version having a higher stock clock by a minimal amount (810MHz core clock :P ). So the results of flashing should be the same for all 6950's.

There are numerous reports at Xtremesystems that some flashes aren't stable.

Not all 6950's will unlock, and the boards TDP will not allow them to go much further than a 6970's stock clocks.

My 6970 is currently topped out at 950 and will go further once I've got some more volts, (Unlocked bios maybe?) so there's still benefits from getting the faster card.

Just flashed this HIS 6950 to a HIS 6970. Not changed any clocks or power settings so just running as a vanilla 6970. All seems fine, no artifacts.

can i ask why you flashed an HIS bios and not an asus? i thought the asus gave you more options like voltage control?

i ask as i've ordered the HIS one :)

What I would like to know before o decide to buy is
1 what are the long term effects of this flash with the psu connectors
2 does the warranty still count with a 6970 bios
1. it's just like the same as if you oc a card
2. u could flash it back if u need the rma it.
