Unlock your ATI 6950 to a 6970 Thread

both flashed with ease, nothing special actually.
get snow in windows (2d) and bench wont run.
tried several bioses, no go.
tried to lower mhz, etc..same issue.

flash back to 6950, all is well.
other card seems to work good with unlock.

Powercolor, watercooled.

Hi flopper sorry to see your having issues, powercolour = vtx right ? have not had time to look through whole thread so I was wondering what your temps are accross the board using gpuz as I have found my vtx cards seem to have a max tolerance around 85/90oc anything on & around these temps I run into problems so i have had to manually set the fans to keep my gpu temps lower.

^Andy^ has a link to the working ATI flash I think.

Sure do - download this rar file but do NOT use the bios contained in it because it's for a 6870..

http://www.nolurking.com/files/6870HISflash.rar

Just take the ATIFlash.exe and look at the bat file for the correct syntax.

Guys can you also be honourable in your unlocking - if you hit problems please for the love of god share them here because if there are going to be problems with frying the cards then you don;t really all need to fry them :).

Oh for crying out loud. I was already torn on whether to get a HD6950 and this, I think, has just tipped me over the edge....

Just a quick query - when flashing I assume the new HD6970 clocks will be applied (so 880/1375 instead of 800/1250(?)?).

Assuming the above is correct and I want voltage control (I do), does the Asus bios do anything else but up the stock clock by 10mhz?

I just want to make sure before ordering....:D

Another one unlocked here, an HIS version, so you can add this one to the list easy.:)
for anyone who's never done this before and is a little apprehensive at doing it, on the techpowerup page theres an option to download a complete "flashing package" for inexperienced ppl, ie, me:D. I used this in desperation as I tried all the quoted methods and still had no joy. This package has everything you need to unlock the extra shaders and comes with instructions too. Worked a treat too, currently benching @ stock 6970 clocks.
VERY happy bunny here.

That's the package I have downloaded as well.

Just a quick query - did you try the batch files contained within the download package?

JUst make sure you copy the correct bios over to the winflash folder or you will flash with a reference bios

I did mine in cmd and it was very easy.

Instructions on the OP

Read the batch file and everything will be come clear.

I have to say at this time of year its just what the Doctor ordered. :)

This "6970" is eating up Black OPs and its so much more fun to play than having a 6870.

The reference bios isn't a problem (although I assume any bios that you want to try needs to be renamed to "unlock.bin") as I would try that first and then try the Asus Bios.

The instructions are perfectly self explanatory both in the OP and the TPU article.

I was just curious about the batch file. I am assuming that I can just double click the "unlock.bat" file and it will perform the flash as if it's running a macro?

I don't want to try it at the moment as I am analysing the files on my Alienware M11x and it might have a hissy fit if I try to flash the 335m bios with a HD6970.... :p:eek: ( I know it won't work but I don't want to mess anything up on this laptop as I have got it just right....).

Others have used the batch file without issue.

I just typed the stuff in CMD:)

I chose the 6970 Sapphire Bios. I was going to have a go with the Asus bios but TBH i'm happy at the mo.Black ops has been running for over 4hours now and I'm having no issues.:)

Excellent, thanks for that!

Now do I order one or the CF bundle.....

EDIT - Actually for the moment I think I will stick to my GTX460 SLI 1GB OC setup.

I just ordered myself a 6950 as a Christmas treat. I was very tempted by the 6970 but thought I'd be better off saving some money.
Would anyone like to hazard a guess at how happy I am after having gone for a 6950 and have now found this thread literally minutes later?
