**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

Are the AS3's still considered one of the better tyres out there?
Hit a pothole earlier today - took out one of my AS2's. The other one on the same axle is still legal, but I'll replace both - have those shifted to the back and then have the rear year-old AS3's moved to the front.

Size is 225/40/18

Seems I can get the AS3's for £85 each if I drive to my closest city or £91 each if I use good old Black Circles.

This is really the most I want to be spending, just wanted to make sure there was nothing else worth looking at.

Yep!

Makes sense to do that seeing that the other axle is also AS3.

Any tyres out there that won't get utterly destroyed on track and will last longer than the below, or am I being hopeful?

I'm running Federals now at £72 each but they've lasted me about 4000 miles / 3 hours on track since July '16.

Unfortunately it's hard to say how long a tyre would last on track as it depends how hot they get, how fast you're going, how heavy your car is etc.

Having said that, the Michelin Pilot Super Sport has very good wear characteristics on the road, so I can only imagine this would translate over to the track. If you wanted a track orientated tyre, the Yokohama Advan AD08R is might to be a good all rounder.

They don't do Super Sports in my size unfortunately which is a shame.

My plan was to go for Pilot Sport 4s but I'm cautious of this in terms of how fast they'll get shredded on track and how much grip I'll lose, being FWD, losing traction isn't very enjoyable!

I'll check out the AD08R's and how people rate them in terms of wear, didn't realise they were priced almost the same as the 595 RS-Rs.

If only I hadn't sold my other wheels so cheap :(

~~

On the subject of Federals, their factory in Taiwan went up in smoke yesterday!

I have MPSS on my M135i, so a relatively heavy car for track use. The first set saw nearly 30,000 miles of use, which was mainly on the road but also included two track days (about a cumulative 4 hours on track I'd guess) and two trips to (and a total of 8 laps of) the Nürburgring.

I'm on my second set of tyres now (they've done ~18,000 miles now) and they have 5mm of tread left. I don't really have anything to compare them to on the track, but I never really felt they didn't have enough grip, at least for the way I drive. When they lose traction it's very progressive and predictable. Gibbo has used them on track quite a bit I think so maybe he can comment further.

It's a shame they aren't available in your sizes as I doubt you can get a better road tyre for track use (except possibly the new MPS4S).

Second set of tears?! Were they that bad :p

I'll head toward the PS4S next and see how far the rears get me. PSS got me around 15k miles, CSC6 got me 10K miles (all rears of course). If the PS4S can add another 5K, then that would be excellent.

I'm tempted to get a new set of 18" wheels so I can fit Super Sports on tbh.

Currently running 17s which I don't think even the PS4-s will support.

EDIT: Yep, just spoke to somebody at Michelin, no planned release for 17" or 18" tyres for the Pilot Sport 4 S !!

Just found Pilot Super Sports at 215 / 45 R 17 which should be okay on my wheels.
I'm currently on 225 / 45 / R 17 on 17x7.5 rims.
Looking at just under £500 fitted for 4!

What did the rears do? Obviously both front and rears didn't last 30k miles.

They aren't - in my size 255/35/19, BC list the F1AS3 as £155, the PS4 as £175, the PSS as £190 and the PS4S as £217 fully fitted.

As much as I'd like to try PS4S if Michelin weren't so annoyingly stupid with tyre sizing it's difficult to see how they justify so much extra money for them.

Buying decent tyres for BMW's is getting hugely annoying as it seems only Goodyear remember that they have different sizes front to rear and bother to offer the same tyre in both sizes
