**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

Have just ordered a set of Pilot Sport 4 as I really couldn't wait any longer for PS4-S. Tyres are on some of the indicator notches now and wet grip is more shocking than usual.

Will see how well they manage a trackday with adequate pressure management, if it's not manageable I'll just get a second set of rims for track only, can't be bothered fussing about trying to find a good road-capable well-wearing track tyre as I'm chasing fairy dust until PS4-S are available in the sizes I want.

You can discount the PS3 as it's a vastly inferior tyre to the F1A3. The Primacy is worse still than the PS3, so personally I'd opt for the F1A3's.

The last time I used blackcircles they rotated the tyres from front to back for free for me as I'd asked in advance. This was a small garage in the middle of nowhere though, for a larger garage they might charge you for it.

Thanks. For the sake of £30 I will look at the Goodyears then.

I just asked Blackcircles about the tyre rotation and they wanted £7.50 per tire to rotate.. so I have found somewhere else that will do it for free.

I am hoping that the Goodyears have a better wear rate than the Continentals?

The perfectionist in me would like 4 matching tyres but 12k on a set isn't really cutting it. I posted previously about a bit of uneven wear on one of the tyres which probably hasn't helped. I wanted to check it properly but VW were quoting £450(!!) for a 4 wheel alignment as apparently if they change anything they have to recalibrate the adaptive cruise control radar.....

Just serviced the gf's car so I took it out for a quick test drive and had an small tiny, minute, micro, nanoscopic encounter which reminded me cheap tyres will catch you out one day. This is why it's important to have good tyres even if you "never drive fast" or "only pop down to the shops". You don't have to drive like Johnny Herbert everywhere to benefit from being able to stop quickly.

Luckily I was only doing 40mph, was looking ahead and paying attention. The road was wet/greasy at the time and had I been doing 5-10mph more (which you can easily do and it's a NSL road) and had Linglong/Wanli/Triangle etc tyres all round, I would have gone into the side of him. Just where he was looking I have no idea. I was driving slowly, I had my lights on and yet he still had no idea I was there

You were miles away from hitting him though? Talk about hyperbole :/

Try driving a bit more sensibly in future, driving past blind junctions clearly too quickly to stop comfortably.

A) I was 5 metres away on a wet road having just been braking harshly with the ABS kicking in.
B) Hyperbole?? Where is the hyperbole in what I said?? In fact I actually called it a "small encounter which reminded me why buying cheap tyres may catch you out one day", and you think that is an overexaggerated statement?
C) I can't think of a C

According to the GPS, I was doing 39mph to be precise. Thanks for your driving tips though Clarkey - always nice to hear an expert opinion

So you had a near miss but still don't think there's anything wrong with the speed you were driving, and I'm the one who's in the wrong?

Jesus wept, this is really super basic driving school stuff. Blind bends are a hazard, side junctions are a hazard, slippery winter roads are a hazard. Combine all three of these and it's still ok for you to speed along at a speed where caution is thrown to the wind?

Need to get all 4 tyres changed and have been looking at the PS4 as everyone seems to recommend them. It's only an E46 320Ci so nothing special.

Tempted to go with Costco, plus they have a £50 voucher if getting all 4 done so will be just over £450 for the full set.

Fronts - 225/40/R18 and Rears 255/35/R18.

Seems fairly reasonable. Anything else I should look at?

You were the one who literally was just arguing that I was "miles away from him"?!

Again, are you serious? You just accused me of hyperbole, then you say I was "speeding along at a speed where caution is thrown to the wind".

Reality check - I was doing 39mph, spotted the car early, had my hand on the horn ready, and managed to stop safely, without panic, with 5 metres to spare. I had a "near miss" because someone pulled out of a junction without looking. I managed to not have a crash because I was alert, in a car with decent tyres and driving to the conditions. This is fairly simple stuff Clarkey and I must admit I'm a bit shocked it's troubling you... :)

I think the only lesson I would take from you right now is how to contradict myself like a pro. ;)

I wish I had a Costco near me :( they have some awesome prices. £450 is a very good price especially if that's fully fitted.

Has anyone had experience with wider tyres and insurance?

My choice with 215/45/18 is awful. But with 225/45/18 can get PS4 and other decent tyres.

Nothing wrong with the driving or speed on that video. Put it into full screen and it's quite easy to site that junction to the left on entry to the bend, the driver pulling out was not paying attention. Driver in camera car stopped in plenty of time, nothing happened, one of those things.

Had four PS4s fitted this afternoon. Only a short drive back home on NSL dual carriageway but they certainly do feel very good and have been quite impressed so far. On a sadder not the state of my alloys is pretty bad even for a 13 year old car. Tempted to get them refurbished but in two minds as will hopefully be getting something newer in the next 12-18 months.

Notice you are in S-O-T, have a FB search for Potters Wheels. Reasonably priced and does a great job.

Looking like I'm going to need new front and rears on my F10 535d as all 4 tyres are getting close to the limit.

What's the current suggestion for the best tyre for a F10 now? Should I be looking for the BMW * marked tyres, and is it still suggested to move away from RFT tyres?

edit - forgot to say I have the 19" alloys (so I think its 245/40 for the fronts and 275/35 for the rears), and having just had a quick look struggling to find a decent tyre that is available for both the fronts and rears!

I just bought Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 runflats for my 535d. These are the best runflat * marked tyres that are available for both the fronts and rears. I think I would have gone for PS4S had all the conditions been met, but they aren't (yet) so I couldn't.

Runflats on the Z4 were totally insufferable but are fine on the F10 with M Sport suspension so I'm opting to stay with runflats...
