**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

no idea what tyres to go for on my z4 coupe.

current CSL reps are staying as the tyres are fine but I've got a set of Z4M wheels and will need new tyres for that, stock sizes at -;

225/40/18 and 255/35/18 rear

any recommendations?

I just bought Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 runflats for my 535d. These are the best runflat * marked tyres that are available for both the fronts and rears. I think I would have gone for PS4S had all the conditions been met, but they aren't (yet) so I couldn't.

Runflats on the Z4 were totally insufferable but are fine on the F10 with M Sport suspension so I'm opting to stay with runflats...

Having searched for a few hours now I've come to a similar conclusion that the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3's in RFT guise are probably my best option!

I have Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3's on the rear of my Beemer, 320d (remapped). They're very good. Didn't bother with runflats though, compromise the ride too much, and are over priced. Any problems I just call the AA, make it their problem.

Fronts I still have Vredestein Ultrac Vorti's. Can't stress how good these are, had so much concfidence in the car when I had these on all 4 corners.

I'm looking for 4x new 225/45/18 tyres for a Passat estate. Current best option seems to be the Kumho Ecsta Le Sport KU39 for £83 (without fitting). Anyone suggest anything else to consider?

Edit: My Continental Sport Contact 5 tyres have lasted less than 6k miles on the front. Seems excessively low?

How you drive will have a huge impact on how well they last, but the passat is a fairly large, fairly heavy diesel (presumably) FWD car so I'm not surprised.

I only used to get around 8K miles out of CSC2 on my old Mondeo, and that wasn't being ragged around, just normal driving. My personal opinion of Contis is that they are great tyres, but they simply don't last at all.

You can get * marked PSS for the fronts, not too sure about the rears though. People will say you're mad to buy such an old tyre, but IMHO they are still one of the best available. That said I've not tried PS4 or PS4S yet.

/edit: Just looked and PSS available for the front, but not the rear. PS4 available for both front and rear (F=~£95, R=~£128).

Am I right in thinking Eagle F1 AS2s aren't highly regarded? I've not been very impressed with the AS2s on my Scoob. They let go fairly easily for what is relatively little power and AWD.

They're coming close to the wear markers so I need to think about replacements. Seems like the AS3 are worth a look at.

I was very happy with the performance they offered on my last car. Far better than the rubbish Pirelli I have now.

Sometimes I find it hard to really judge a tyre until I've had an alternative on the same car tbh. I can't wait to get my ps4's back on the Octavia now it's had the (fairly terrible in "normal" condition) Dunlop winters on. Tbh even the PS3's were much better and those are a tyre I think are very much middle of the road in general. Not that this is necessarily unexpected, just an example

Personally I always thought AS2's to be pretty good on whatever car I've had them.

Interesting, thanks guys. I was sure I'd seen posts a while ago saying that the AS2 weren't as good as previous versions of the tyre. Maybe I was dreaming, ha.

I do know my tyres were on the car when the previous owner bought it so are quite a few years old. Doesn't the compound start to harden as the tyre gets older?

edit... Just had a quick look and F1 AS3s are £70 each.

The set of F1 GSD3s I put on my Rover was closer to £400

yeah tempting! I can get uniroyal rainsport 3's for around 400ish fitted.

anyone had any experience with them?

Rainsports are all hype. They offer mid-range performance for a mid-range price.

They are like the modern equivalent of the Falken FK452 - a tyre that was more hype than rubber.

They're an OK tyre in the dry perform very well in the wet, they'll feel a bit crap on a Z4 and a set if rears will last you about 72 miles

I've got Falken fk453 right now and I don't mind them in try but in wet it is way to easy to unstick them which is what I dislike.

What would you lot recommend then? spend a bit more and go for PS4 I guess ?

I don't daily drive the car it is mainly for weekend and short trips to gym/mates etc but no daily driving.

I usually drive hard and like to have decent amounts of grip in dry and wet. Not too fussed about winter performance as IMO no summer tyre is going to be brilliant at it.

The used Z4 3.0i Coupe I test drove on a wet day many moons ago had UniRoyals on. Gave me a fright when the back stepped out as I turned into a road. I had a Z3 3.0i Coupe with Michelin PS2s on at the time so I really wasn't expecting that to happen.

Why not just buy the best tyres you can? You've got a performance car; use UHP tyres.
