**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

Bought my 52 reg Mondeo back in June, put about 4000 miles on it since (moving house and whatnot). Bit ashamed to say it but it's had 2 budget tyres (autogrip?) on the front and 1 no name and 1 bridgestone on the rear.

It's been fine so far as I can tell (I've kept the pressures correct) but it's been nagging me to get them replaced since I bought it.

So I'm wondering whether it's worth getting 4 good brand part worns from the tyre place round the corner OR spending £200~ on 4 Toyo Proxes CF2s plus another £100 on fitting and wheel alignment?

I know new is best, but I'm struggling to justify that expense at the minute.

Avoid the part worn whatever you do, they are probably not as safe as the budgets you have on (don't know the history etc - at least you know the budgets are going to perform relatively poorly).

Not sure which tyre size, but if it's 205/55R16 - then Proxes are £52.39 fitted on Blackcircles = £210 fitted

ATS do "Computerised 4 Wheel alignment" for £62.99, and an independent is likely to be cheaper than that.

If you are struggling to afford all 4 tyres in one go, then arguably replace the 2 mismatched rears now, and then replace the other 2 in a month and get the alignment done then.

I thought as much.

Yeah, 205/55R16s.

There's a few places nearby that do just fitting, so I may mail order them for £39.19 each and see how cheaply I can do it. There's a guy who lives round the corner with a mint Z4 who does mobile fitting actually. I'll pop round and see what he can offer. Then I can get the alignment at a later date.

I may be wrong but I think the Proxes are the best tyre for that kind of price.

Michelin Pilot Sport 3? They come in 205/50/16 according to Blackcircles

or Dunlop Sport Maxx RT

Have considered both, reviews seem quite mixed though.. Quite a compromise compared to the top tyres, but as those aren't available in my size it limits me to the not quite as good ones! Still a way to go before current ones need replacing, hopefully I'll make a decision before then :p

Just ordered the 4 Proxes fitted with Blackcircles. The local ATS does a free brake and tracking check, so I'll see whether I need to pay £62.99 for the 4 wheel tracking. They're cheaper than any of the independent garages around here, who want £65-80 for it.

Tyre size? The Ventus S2 tyres are good IIRC. Other options are the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 or the Continental Sport Contact 5P or 6 if you can wait a while.

Today I had my 95% worn bridgestone truanza e300's replaced with Pilot Sport 3's on the front of my Ibiza. I can't say what the bridgestones were like new, but during my ownership they tramlined a lot, and were quite noisey. PS3's seem to keep to the steering wheel better and are far less noisey, probably due to the wear though.

At £4 per corner more for the PS3's compared to the rest of the midrange, it was a no brainer.

Continental have a deal on AAU the moment, buy any two ties and get a free hotel stay. Typically hotels like Travelodge etc.

Got the Proxes CF2s on now, ATS only charged me £36 for aligning the front two wheels as the back two toes have seized up apparently, but only the left rear was slightly out so I'm not too worried about that.

More worried by the fact that they fitted the tyres with pressures ranging from 2.5 to 2.7 bar.

Need 4 tyres to go on my wifes mk2 1.6 focus. Currently it has some arrow speeds and some that i cant really find a brand name on (just a bunch of numbers). Was thinking of rainsport3s as they are well reviewed but then they wear quick-ish. Was also thinking, that as it mainly only goes down town with the odd 30 mile motorway trip to bristol, will budgets surfice ?

I think Continentals on my old Focus mk1 1.6 were £75 fitted a corner. Can't imagine budgets would be much cheaper than that for such a small size (think mine were 195/50/15) so may as well go for good tyres?

I doubt you'll find anyone on here who will recommend budget tyres... they're just not worth it.

In the grand scheme of motoring... tyres aren't the most expensive thing and the difference between the cheap stuff and the decent ones is tremendous!

What are the size?

It will be written on the side of the tyres like tummelv says... something like 195 50 R15 or similar...

195/50/15 is one of the cheapest sizes with decent tyres.

£40 each for Potenzas

AD08R are ~£75 per tyre :D

Yup... I remember buying tyres for my first mk1 mx5... it was bliss at 195/50/15... Toyo T1Rs for £30 each fitted or £75 for R888s

Not as cheap as they used to be, but still a good size...
