urgent help on 1st build!

It would be obvious if your motherboard only used DDR2 memory and you tried to put in DDR3, or if your mobo only could take DDR2 PC6400 and you tried to put 8500 but just just a brand? Nah it must work ...

Some boards just don't like certain RAM. My P5Q Pro absolutely refused to run my OCZ Platinum 6400 at its rated speed.

In this case, though, it looks like the problem may be Minato's mobo itself.

Tried the other RAM slots? It's quite funny but sometimes that fixes this problem ;).

Anyways, I'm still standing strong that it's the PSU problem - either just the faulty PCI-E lead or the whole box.

Could be the mobo as well but that would be my last guess unless he did some physical dmg ( accidently pulled/scratched whatever bit of it ) to it while mounting.

Either way, goodluck, I would like to know myself as well which one was it so ill be watching this :).

lol Thanks Phoenix, but like I put earlier, tried all the ram in all combinations in all the slots.

I Don't think it's a PCI-E lead because when I put my old gfx card in, there's no change.

this is an interesting turn of events lol, the speaker just arrived! looks exactly like the picture you guys gave me earlier, so all we need now is the new motherboard.

The RAM comment wasnt for you ;-).

And I don't see what GPU has to do with the lead/psu being faulty, does your old GPU not require external power lead?

I was using all the slots. I know this puts more stress on the memory controller, but it should still be able to run the RAM at stock settings with loads of voltage...

That was quick...! Hopefully the mobo will come similarly quickly...

I know it should !! But you could try using just 2 sticks, change settings and then try to switch.

I've came up to similar problem where pc6400 ram was running @ 6-6-6-18 timings and even with 2.2v through it, it wont POST with any other kind of settings than the auto. Then, we swapped the ram from slots 1/3 to 2/4 and DANG!, boots up with 4-4-4-12 880mhz straight away :). Dunno why it was like this and don't ask me because I don't know the explanation for this, sometimes electronic stuff does funny things :), that's all I know.

you said it might be a faulty PCI-E cable, and my old GPU needs one, unlike the 285 which needs 2.

Just reading this thread and first of all i must say you have an amazing attitude. I'm only 16 and built my first PC around 1 year ago and had the exact same problem as you in terms of PC starting up but nothing appearing on the video display, also happened at the start of the summer holidays :( and was one of the most frustrating things to ever happen to me. My solution was just RMA the whole thing (Was an AMD system) and just bought all new (intel) components, excluding my graphics card which i kept. Chances are imho it's your motherboard.

Anyway, Will subscribe to the thread.

Best of luck!

Joseph

EDIT: where abouts in London are you from bud?

Did you try both of the leads with your 8800? Just one of em can be faulty.

Also the 8800 uses nowhere as much power, and by faulty lead, it doesnt mean that its not going to work, it might work untill certain load has been reached - same goes for PSU, just because it's faulty does not mean it won't run at all :).

It's hard to say really if you don't have the parts to swap.

As I see you living in London, if I wasn't abroad right now, I could have help you out with it.

Hope you get it fixed soon.

quite odd...the RAM has arrived, and according to my account page, it's been refunded. The wierd thing is the motherboard still says We are waiting to recieve this item. I sent them both at the same time, so shouldn't they both arrive together?

p.s: phoenix, it's a 9600gt mate, but thanks =)

got an automated email saying testing can take up to 7 days...bummer =(

On the plus side, I might go buy a PS3 game to keep the time ticking

If it has a fault and it's instantly recognisable upon setup the turn around should, hopefully, be less than 3 days - that is if they're not swamped with returns.

Obviously, if a fault doesn’t present itself straight away, they will have to test it further – delaying the turn around.

I've usually had a result in under 3 days when rmaing faulty components.

Wow, just read the whole thread and it was like reading a good novel!
This seems like a wonderful community. Any room for an old git? (Is 'git' a rude word?) :)
Minato, you have a great outlook and attitude. I'm sure I would not have had your patience when I was your age. Blimey, I do sound like an old fart!
Anyway, good luck with the build and lets hope it doesn't take too long. I'm sure OCUK will sort it quickly. I've been a customer for a few years, due mainly to the excellent customer care.
I'm twittering again, better slope off...
