LOL!! oh man we need to email that to steven spielberg, we'll all be millionares, and then we can build super special awesome pc's!

hmm, the Motherboard hasn't arrived yet according to the RMA page =(

since they are closed tomorrow, they'll get it on Monday, and if testing is done fast, earliest we'll get to see it back is around Wednesday.

I got Sims 3 though, so i'll get to play that for the next few days to pass time lol.

Shame to hear about the extended wait, I hope they get to work on it first thing Monday.

Lol, sims 3. I really want to play that game but my sister in aberdeen has got the copy. I was considering buying it, but I'll be up there in weeks time - so it seems like a waste. From what I hear, Its a great game and a massive time sink - sounds perfect.

Sorry to say but I saw on another thread that the RMA department was 17 days behind schedule, i hope its not the case for you. Good luck.

thanks for the information mate. I hope it's not the case, since when they got my RAM, as soon as it arrived it got refunded.

If it is a long wait then it's not the end of the world, just an inconvenience.

I sent a faulty HD back last week (they got it on Thursday) and by Friday evening I'd had an email saying a new one had been despatched.
But then again testing a HD is a little different from testing a motherboard!

just got an email from OcUK saying they are returning the motherboard back to me, because there are bent pins. I'm really gutted about this since I couldn't see any bent pins, and now i've got a motherboard that doesn't work.

for once...I can't seem to see the bright side lol.

any ideas?

Damn, bent pins, that's not good.

I believe it is possible to remedy bent pins with a steady hand and some patience. Just need to locate them when you get the board back.

If all else fails, you could auction off the board as faulty (describe the problem) and put the money raised towards a new board (I'd be tempted to upgrade to a UD5 so it doesn't feel like a total waste).

when I sent the board off I couldn't see anything out of place, or when I removed the heatsink. Perhaps I don't know what to look for! When I get it back (in a few days time probably); I'll take a picture of the socket and upload it here. I must say, i'm having trouble believing this is just bent pins...but then it explains it perfectly:

Since:
Everything powers up, then shutsdown.
When the CPU has no power, it can't even start up, so it doesn't trigger the shutdown error.
I Don't get anything on the screen because the CPU isn't doing what it should be doing.

OK, looks like it's (Finally!!!) boiled down to 2 options =)

1) I can (with your help ofc) unbend the pins and everything handy dandy works fine.

2) I can't unbend the pins, or the pins are possibly fine, OcUK made a mistake and there is something dodgy about the motherboard. In this case, i'll have to fork out another £130 odd, to get a new motherboard.

I would normally write here: "one step closer to get this over with lads"

Instead I think i'll say: "please let me end this nightmarish problem!"

hope you're all having a troublesome free evening lol =)

Well mate at least now you can have a go at fixing the problem, why didn't ocuk help you out and unbend the pins themselves seeing as you spent a lot of cash for your system with them?
Wasn't this one of the earlier suggestions to check out before you RMA'ed it?
Any how with a staedy hand and a good eye I bet you can fix the little buggars!
Good luck.

If the pins are only bent a touch, and not near 90 degrees you should be able to straighten them with a pair of tweezers. Just be very gentle; they won't need much force to move them.
If they are bent to near 90 degrees, heat them with a hair dryer before you try to move them. Get them hot. If you try to move them cold they would likely snap. I think they are made of copper (can't remember to be honest) so they should move ok.

If you're not feeling too confident about bending them I don't mind doing it for you. You could mail the board to me then I'll mail it back as soon as I can. (I can't be held responsible though!). I've done quite a few pins on the old processors before. But that was a while ago! And I am really old :)

Hopefully, it will be a simple process to bend them back Minato - and if is you could be back in business by the end of tomorrow… maybe.

Here’s hoping anyway.

why didn't ocuk help you out and unbend the pins themselves seeing as you spent a lot of cash for your system with them?

Because if they had botched it they would have made themselves liable and, as the original fault was not of their doing, they couldn't take the risk - it's not an exact science bending pins back; sometimes they snap.

It's one of those situations where 'they couldn't do right for doing wrong', unfortunately. If they had snapped them trying to repair it they would have, technically, claimed liability for the problem.

In the past they may have tried, on the buyers behalf, but we live in such a litigious society that retailers are probably scared of offering any help for fear of it biting them in the ass. (That, and tight margins plus back logs etc... ;))

yeah, hopefully (wohoo the brightside is back lol) the pins aren't at 90 degrees. If they were I think I would have spotted it =)

PaulGreyhead, makes a good point about heating them first if they're badly bent - it alleviates some of the risk - but if they're only slightly bent you should be ok.

If you google the problem you should get a lot of hits (pictorial as well as descriptive) as it's a common problem. Someone’s probably even uploaded their technique on youtube.

it has been confirmed at the "hub" according to the DPD site. Whether that is their hub or mine, I have no idea, but the motherboard will be back with me tomorrow =).

That gives me all of tomorrow morning/afternoon to read up on fixing bent pins lol.

Hmm. Not sure how you could have bent the pins, as you insert the CPU dead vertically and I'm sure you'd have been reasonably careful. Hard to imagine it happening during shipping too as the socket is protected by a cover. Perhaps it was a manufacturing defect?

Either way, it should be possible to bend the offending pins back, but it's a delicate task since there're 1366 of them and they're very small! Never tried bending pins before, so I'll leave you in the hands of someone who has!
