urgent help on 1st build!

i've got my old 9600gt gfx card, and the psu from my old dell. the problem with the psu is it's enclosed in like a massive box, bolted in a million places with an impossible method to get it out.

i'll try swapping the gpu though.

It won't as it's not getting to post - nor is it recognising any errors.

It would be worth trying to see if you get any error beeps without the CPU installed.

ok, old gpu inserted, and exactly the same thing, which means my gtx 285 is good right?

I'd guess so. You may want to keep your 9600gt in, it is less expensive if something goes wrong, draws less power and takes up less space - perfect for the testing you are doing.

Other than the dell PSU, is there any other power supply units you can get your hands on?

two other pc's in the house, this one, and the study one, both dells unfortunately.

if i manage to get the cpu out, and there's no beep on startup, would that mean a borked mobo?

that sounds possible...what if it just isn't powerful enough? (650W)

then again, my 9600gt only needs 1 pci power, so it should have been fine then.

possibilities: faulty psu/mobo/cpu?

You are twisting those push pins before removal? and you do have the motherboard detached from the actual backplate of the case?

They can be tight, but they don't take 30 minutes to remove.

Did you place the thermal palce and heatsink yourself?

650W should be more than enough, especially with such a low power GPU.

I think its pretty unlikely that the CPU is faulty as you should get some messages on the board and on screen if that were the case.

Btw, how is the cooler removal going?

BTW: anyone who has trouble with the evil push pin cpu cooler, get a flat head screwdriver, and use it to rotate the pins.

All the pins fine? Thats good I suppose, but means we are still in the dark as to what the problem is.

How difficult would it be to get out one of those dell PSUs? If you need to RMA components, you will definitely need to determine which one is faulty. Hopefully a dell PSU can either confirm the PSU as the problem or eliminate it as a suspect.

oh, and there were no bent or damaged pins I could see, which is a good thing.

i seriously hope it's not a dodgy part, all that RMA business is not for me =(

i'll try my best to get my dell psu out. it's 650w so it should have the same connections i hope.

*brings out hammer and chainsaw*

He could lay the DELL rig flat on its side and hopefully the cables might reach (from over the top case) - it will be close but with the MB removed for testing it may be possible.

right, using my dell xps psu is out of the question, since it's inside the case...unless i cut off the metal sheet on top of it, i can't get it out. this means i need to use the study pc psu, which is easy (i hope) to remove, but it might not be as high voltage.

plec, thats actually a really good idea, ill see if i can heave it up onto my desk.

edit: wewt, im a gangster
