urgent help on 1st build!

Hope it works out for you - your first build is turning into a babtism of fire!

Additional: You appear remarkably calm about all of this - i would have totally lost my rag by now in this heat...

guys, you wont believe it.

i removed the cpu power...started it up...and bam...it doesn't shutdown.

the problem is that nothing shows up on the moniter...lol.

now, i think there are two explanations...

1) the psu can't give enough power to everything for whatever reason, but when it doesnt have to power the cpu, it can keep everything else running.

2) something is dodgy about that cpu power cable, because as soon as I put it in, it shutsdown.

now, to add to this freak occurence, why the hell doesn't my moniter show anything lol, it recognises i put a gfx card in, but nothing else.

P.S: Plec, i'm only 14 lol, I don't really lose my rag about anything. =)

refresh summary, hopefully this will help give an idea as to what is being troublesome.

When the CPU Power is disconnected, the computer no longer shuts down after a few seconds, all fans keep spinning, BUT, the gfx card gives no image on the moniter. The gfx card we know is fine because I tested a 9600gt to no avail.

Possible problems are:
  • the PSU
  • the cpu power cable
  • the socket on the motherboard for cpu power
  • something else.

That problem with the CPU power cable is indeed bizarre, but it is definaly needed to get the PC running.

Have you tried a new PSU yet? If you want to run a lower power PSU, try only connecting the motherboard and graphics power cables. HDD/optical/casefans are not needed at the moment.

the problem with the other PSU's is that they have the mobo power, and power for the gfx card, but then no remaining cables for the cpu power.

Okay, well done for being so logical about this - don't think I would have been when I was 14!

I'm tempted to think that the thing with the CPU power cable is a red herring. What I think's happening is that with the connector in, the mobo is finding the CPU and trying to start up, but then it's running into a problem and powering down. But without the CPU power connected, the mobo can't even initialise the CPU and so it just sits there.

Do you have a speaker attached to your motherboard, near the power and reset switches? From the pics it's hard to see. If you do, try powering up with no RAM at all and see if it beeps.

(edit) I would be careful if you're going to try a Dell PSU. Some of them have non-standard wiring arrangements on the mobo connector, which wouldn't do your mobo any good!

yeah, you're right mattus, the mobo connectors are completely different from the ones my mobo uses. I should have a speaker on my mobo, at the moment the only connectors from the f-panel are power sw and reset sw.

P.S: Plec, i'm only 14 lol, I don't really lose my rag about anything. =)

Kudos to you for being the most mature 14 year old I have ever met on the internet :)
No txtspk or abbreviations, good grammar, and polite too. I like you already :D

Sorry I can't help with your PC problems :(

edit - just a thought - have you actually got a speaker attached to your pc? I had to get one from ebay as my Silverstone Fortress didnt come with one, and its a bit cack :(

=) thanks Ucof! I don't have any speakers, for sound i use a pair of creative fatal1ty's.

if there is a beep, should it be coming through an output device, like headsets, or from the mobo/case itself?

You need a speaker like this which attaches to the mobo itself, near to the power and reset switches. I'm not sure if that case or mobo comes with one. If it doesn't it's a pain as it makes things a lot harder to troubleshoot.

most beeps come through the speaker on the MOBO if you dont have one then you need a one lol.

*EDIT* beaten to it :P

my front panel gives me an audio cable, but when plugged in it doesn't provide beeps, so I guess that's the wrong one. I'll hunt through all the extra things I have to look for one, but I don't really remember seeing one.

Mobo is a Gigabyte UD3P if I forgot to post it

the audio cables are for the mic and speaker jacks on the front, the speaker you need should look like the picture that mattus posted.

Aye, the diagnostic speaker should have a connector like the one pictured above and connect into the bottom right F_PANEL area. If it says HD AUDIO or AC97, thats a connection to the mobo sound card and not the one you want.

thats exactly what i've got...I'm now on a hunt for the mobo manual, which has run off mysteriously. I think my parts are conspiring against me :D

good luck lol, whenever i need a manual its never where i put it but when i dont need it its always infront of me lol.

right, found the manual. It had hidden itself underneath the sheet on my desk...underneath the xps. lol.

my f-panel connector has the 4 pins for speaker, and I remember seeing a cable I didn't plug in, however I have a feeling that was for sata.

guys, got any more ideas?

i might have to start RMA'ing stuff, or if worst comes to worst, i'll go down to ocuk with all my stuff (I live in London lol) and work with the guys there to get it sorted. I sincerely hope it doesn't come to that though =(
