urgent help on 1st build!

morning gents, I was just checking out the thread where a guy was advised to steer clear of the gigabte ud3r board, he opted to swap to the Asus P6T SE which is exactly the same price as my current motherboard.

Would it be worth it to RMA the motherboard for the Asus, or RMA the RAM and hope that the new set is compatible?

If you’re returning the components under the distance selling act then you may as well try the memory first as it is the cheaper option if it fails. You could order your replacement today and box up your present stuff for refund - just make sure the packaging is as you received it and all instructions are enclosed. (Just remember you only have 7 days to take advantage of this process.)

The MB will be slightly harder to rma via the DSA, unless you’re returning it as faulty, as you’ve installed it in the system plus if you’ve ripped open any bags etc this makes the exchange process slightly harder as you will not be returning it in the condition you received it - but not impossible.

If you’re returning them as faulty the above still applies – as the memory will still be the cheaper option based purely on p&p costs – both will incur a £10 testing fee if found not to be at fault and you will have to pay for the goods to be returned to you (all mounts up). The plus side to the rma process, for suspected damaged goods, is that you have up to 28 days to return the goods for exchange/refund and you get your p&p costs covered if a component is found to be at fault (you will have to request this though and enclose proof of your postage costs).

Additional: Did you establish whether your MB had a speaker on it from Mattus's photo of your MB (your board layout doesn’t show one)?

If it does have a speaker onboard, and it’s not giving out any error beeps with no memory installed etc. it is pointing towards the MB (if the PSU is ruled out of course).

the problem is, i don't think any part is fault as such, just the ram/mobo are incompatible.

I paid around £1000 for it total, and OcUK have great customer service, so when I give them a ring on monday, i'll explain to them, and i'm sure they'll offer an exchange of some kind.

would be great if a don or something could give a word on this?

If it's just an incompatibilty problem then the memory is your easiest and cheapest option.

OC's will have no problem swapping your memory - i've done it many times in the past - just make sure it's returned in the same packaging.

thanks plec, don't know what I'd do without you lot =)

I suspect you would have found an alternate method of resolving your problem - you seem very resourceful for your 14 years.

Good luck with it – let us know how you get on.

Additional: +1 vote for the Noctua very efficient and very quiet.

I'm not sure if anyone has mention it yet due to the amount of responses but what I would suggest is if your PSU is modular, check for different set of PCI-E / mobo cables and try using a diff cable - had similar problems in the past which turned out to be just a dodgy lead.

You can try a different power lead as well or maybe even a different power socket at home.

If it was anything with memory only, you'll get beeps so it's not that. I would say it's either PSU or mobo :).

The PSU is non modular (corsair TX 650w shown in 1st pisture on 1st page). So unfortunately if it is a dodgy lead - a new PSU would be needed to check (which is not available).

Well, if you have the money to throw at returns you just have to make an informed choice.

If you feel it's a straight forward 'memory incompatibilty' issue - you may as well lead with that as it's the simplest component to exchange and fit/test. (and a cheap rma via the DSA.)

After that it's a choice between the PSU or MB - and things obvioulsy get a bit pricier then.

What I would do is try and get a speaker off the net. Once you know if there are any beeps or not, you can make a more informed decision about what to return.

I agree with Mattus (plus it will be handy to have for future troubleshooting issues) - but I would be inclined to swap the memory while you're within the 7 day window as you seem fairly confident that it's memory related and the whole returns/exchange process will only cost you £10 max in p&p.

fair enough, tomorrow i'll ring up OcUK and see what they think, RMA the RAM, and go and buy a speaker from somewhere lol. what should I ask to exchange it for? The Kingston seems fine atm...any ideas?

I buy Kingston memory for my systems it's pretty slutty - but i would look at ppls sigs and see what forum members are using in your MB.

Or, hopefully someone will pop up and let you know what they and other users are using in that particular MB.

Have any of your searches given anything up?

You don't have to run it at 1600MHz if you buy the 12800 modules. If you can it's a bonus and, really, is to be expected as i don't see any reason why they shouldn't (even if it is classed as oc by the MB) - if not just stick it at 1333 and work on getting it to 1600 over the coming weeks.

just noticed that the RAM section has an incorrect price on their banner...shows it at £70, but actual price is £77.

obviously if they want to lower the price thats fine too, I for one wont be complaining lol =)

Was thinking of the time frame needed to sort the RMA...If I send off my RAM tomorrow, will probably arrive on wednesday. Would they send the new RAM when they get my current set? or would it be a while longer?
