Vettel vs Alonso - Who Deserves it more?

James Allen has a poll here on who was the driver of the year, voted by 800 fans.

Most selected driver in first place:
1. Fernando Alonso – 69%
2. Sebastian Vettel – 16%
3. Lewis Hamilton – 11%
4. Kimi Raikkonen – 2%

Suprised about Alonso's margin. Interesting that the listed 4 make up 98% of the views given. Wonder who was 5th most popular? :p

McLaren proved ONCE AGAIN that they'll throw away a title in the best car!!!!!! :p

Fixed.

Hamiltons driving was almost flawless. The team screwed it for him. I think that vote is just more evidence to support the idea that he simply is liked very much but the British public.

Hamilton only got 11%?

Hamilton had the best car in F1, for many races.
If Alonso or Vettel had driven for McLaren, I'd put money on them winning the title for McLaren in 2012.

The most indicative race for me was the first GP of the season. McLaren had the best car. Vettel beat Hamilton.

Vettel is a championship driver....like A.Prost was before him.
Hamilton is a racer....Like Mansell was before him.

I disagree.
He allowed his team-mate to take points off him, for a start.

Hamilton had a great car this year. On average, probably joint best. Certainly the McLaren was better than the Lotus and even Kimi, in a Lotus scored more points. How do you explain this?

People keep blaming McLaren...when you have to look at the driver as well.

Alonso, Vettel and Kimi were the outstanding drivers of 2012. No question about it. The rest of the drivers weren't even in it.

Of the races they finished, Hamilton was beaten by Button 4 times. Vettel was beaten by Webber 4 times. Alonso was never beaten by Massa, but he was gifted a place by him 3 times and Massa was held back once. All seems pretty even to me. On a side note, it shows how the 1 driver policy can work at times. Alonso would have been out of the championship before the end of the season if Massa hadn't helped him.

If Alonso or Vettel had driven for McLaren, I'd put money on them winning the title for McLaren in 2012.

Thats the second time you have said that, and the second time I'm going to laugh at how stupid it is.

Please, explain how Alonso driving would have prevented the 3 mechanical retirements and numerous team screw ups?

Kimi:
Races Finished - 20

Hamilton:
Races Finished - 14

I think I see what sunama is on about. I say "think" because often I find that the wavelength he's operating on is so diametrically opposed to mine that I wonder how it can be that he remembers to breathe in and out.

If McLaren operated a clear Number 1 driver/Number 2 driver policy, and if the car suited Vettel enough/wasn't so far from suiting Alonso that even he couldn't do anything with it, then one of those drivers would have won the title for McLaren this year. That also assumes that whoever inherits Vettel's RBR seat in this parallel universe doesn't find that car to their liking and win the title with it.

So yeah. Pretty much balls....:p

Thats not the same as just saying "if X driver was in Y car" though. That's saying that if McLaren adopted a completely different policy. But even thats questionable, as a 1 driver policy ins't going to stop gearboxes going pop and stupid pit stop screw ups, is it? :p

Yeah but who's the daddy?

That's the title they all really want. God knows how anyone could say Kimi was better than Hamilton this year. Kimi struggled against Grosjean for ****s sake in qualifying. He's just lucky he was an utter nobbler in the races. Alonso, hamilton and Vettel would have won more races than kimi managed in a car that could finish every race. Hell even the race he won was pretty lucky.

But it's cool to like Kimi so his actual performance this year must be ignored.

Grosjean is actually a pretty quick driver. Kimis performance against him was good (not great) for his first year back. If Grosjean wasn't such a twonk he could have put up a decent challenge to Kimi, and given his speed thats what I would have expected from him. Grosjean is not the same driver he was in 2009.

God knows how anyone could say Kimi was better than Hamilton this year.

Agreed. The gap between Alonso and Hamilton is quite shocking though, given that most peoples ranking of drivers this year seemed to be Alonso, Hamilton........<a number of others>........ Vettel.

He makes a point though. Alonso drove brilliantly for 2/3rds of the season. Had Massa not been held back or gifted him positions he would have been out of the title race well before the last round.

To be fair it was Massa's own fault in some of those cases, where it was clear to see Alonso was getting far more out of the car than Massa ever could

Last few races Massa was brilliant in comparison, but it doesnt excuse his early season form.

Its specifically the last few races I'm talking about. Massa was dire at the start of the season, nobody is disputing that. But from around Italy onwards he drove brilliantly. He could have beaten Alonso in Italy, Korea, USA and Brazil.

Alonso destroyed Massa for the first 2/3rds of the season, but for the latter races he needed Massa's help to keep him in the title race. He couldn't do it on his own. I don't know what the turn around was, maybe Massa just found some uber speed, maybe the pressure got to Alonso, I don't know, but whatever it was Alonso's form that impressed everyone so much at the start of the year was not consistent accross the whole season.
