I ploughed through this on Saturday and Sunday and I have to say I ******* LOVE Vikings... in fact I have had more enjoyment out of this than I have of Game of Thrones. I think it says a lot that Vikings manages to capture big battles so much better than GoT and it makes you realise what a poor job in many respects GoT has done of many of its large and important action scenes which often felt like a damp and disappointing squib.
The look, feel and sound of Vikings is just for me pretty much perfect, especially the way England is captured. The cast is also for the most part outstanding and even the weaker characters have been at worst "good".
The only real things that annoyed me about this season was I thought that the Chinese woman and Ragnars drug addiction was unnecessary, tiresome, and imo served little purpose. The same with Harbard's return, when we first saw him he had a real air of mystery and menace about him, whereas this time his antics with Queen Aslaug (whose character I really dislike, she is annoyingly portrayed) in my view had the opposite effect and kind of ruined my awe for him. I also had to laugh at Rollos sudden mastery of the French tounge.
Other than that as I said, the battles are second to none, the atmosphere oozes from every pore of the sets , and it really is a treat to watch.
9/10 for me.
Really enjoyed the mid season finale. Such an epic battle and the story continues apace. But I did find the sudden shift in timeline jarring. I don't mind that they've leapt ahead, seems there will be some good stories and characters forthcoming. But to do it so abruptly mid episode was plain clunky and not good storytelling. I think they should have left the time jump to the beginning of the next half season, it would have felt more natural because it's going to be several months until the next episode.
For me these editing decisions seem to put the emphasis on promoting / marketing the next [half] season ahead of good storytelling. The sad thing is they don't need to do this. Vikings is very popular, everyone I know who watches it can't get enough. We're all hooked anyway, so just tell the stories properly.
Anyway, good to see Ragnar back with that crazy look in his eye.
Yeah I felt the same... it was rushed and unnecessary. It would have been much better had they ended the mid-season on Ragnars disappearance, or even show him leaving in the current timeline rather than shifting it so far forward and then having him come back all in the same episode. It was highly anticlimactic.
so now a power struggle between him an bjorn. Sacrilege I know but Im enjoying this more than game of thrones atm.
I really have grown to like Bjorn as a character, i think he would make a great King and much more stable than Ragnar. In fact I think Ragnar, while posessed of a brilliant mind, is now in many ways weak, past his prime, and would be best retiring the crown to Bjorn to play an advisers role... not that he would sadly! Will be interesting to hear where he has been though.
