Vince's Ebay Repair Thread - (Console Repairs & Mods)

Hehe liking the sound of that, but no you’ve done far more than expected so there will be beer tokens involved for the ssd.

Anything on here you actually need? I could just not clone it, bash a new drive in and do a windows install :D That would save some time.

and again what a noob - This is exactly what happens when you are speaking to a few people across a few different devices... stuff gets all confusing :P

Had another switch in today, one I fixed for somebody about 8 months ago that came in with orange screen of death last time, plugged it in and it had the dreaded 0.48amp power draw no signs of life. Swapped out the main PMIC, then BQ, still nothing, I noticed it would go into rcm without its nand if the battery wasn't plugged in. If I plugged the battery in it wouldn't enter RMC so that points straight to the charge circuit. Decided most likely culprit was max17050 which is the fuel gauge IC on the switch. Tiny little 3x3 bga.

Swapped it out and boom! Life!

This little chip is only about 2mm X 2mm so super tiny.

And here it is the first switch thats ever come back for a second, totally unrelated repair. It's now had both wifi and fuel gauge failure.

Thats tiiiiiiiiiiiny :p You should have taken up brain surgery.

It's a baby chip and a common failure point on 0.47/0.48 amp draw at 15v (USB pd) power draw. The chip is responsible for checking and reporting on battery condition, charge level etc it works alongside the bq24193 BMIC to provide the charge boost circuit. Down side is no way to really test it so only way is whip it off and see. Sometimes you will see vdroop on the vbat rail which should push out 4.25v but commonly will drop to like 3.8v ish on max17050 failure. This one didn't do that, the rails looked solid, the only give away was rcm (recovery mode) behaviour. That basically pointed me at the circuit.

In other news...

I now have several early ps3 machines, pads, games... paid basically nothing, first thing I think I will do is fully refurbish the pads, new pots, damn good clean and I recon the pads alone pay for what I paid for it all. Two nice condition original ps3 pads... dont mind if I do... don't mind at all.

Today though I rebuild a surface!!

Where do you sell these on via, Vince? eBay?

Yea normally ebay mate, I have an ebay shop where I sell restored stuff :) - If you see something you really like I can put it on the members market I guess, although the rules are kinda shaky for some of this stuff, for example no modified consoles, that also includes for example a game gear with a screen mod, 100% not intended for any sort of enabling of piracy but its a modded console and I agree a blanket rule is probably the right way to deal with it. The rules also state I cannot sell anything for more than I paid for it, which again I totally understand and is right, but what did I pay for any given item (as I buy in bulk, or have repaired and revived them with new parts) is a bit up in the air. I pad what £45 or something for the ps3 lot that had the two pads about 30 games and another early ps3.

Cracking stuff. Does the little led on the charger port come on now? it was wierd, it still charged before but the LED was intermittant.

So with my wifes surface charger I get a light. With your one I do not but it works perfectly other than the light.

edit: I also dont get a light with your charger in my wifes surface, hers is brand new so its probably the charger itself.
