Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Ring Ring

- a really quiet woman, I mean really quiet

/wait 7 minutes while she checks for faults
/please keep waiting
/3 mins later, there's a fault

Apparently they are working on it and it's been around since 10am this morning, which is about right considering skype has been lagging. Funny how the status thing on the VM site says broadband is fine, tv has some problems and phone is fine :S
Time to wait it out I guess, I really should try that UK number *I presume it will be closed though at this time*

Me and my room mates are on the 50meg, praying that we dont get any letters for excessive downloading. I only download at night now, but I do download a hell of a lot but not all the time. Some days I can only use 5-6Gb a day while others are 30Gb+ in one night.

So another wonderful little niggle I've discovered, you can't change the DNS servers on the superhub, wow, that's just fantastic.

Coupled with the **** poor wireless performance it's not looking too great at the moment, I think I'm going to use my dg834GT as a wireless access point ant turn off the wireless on the superhub then maybe run a separate DHCP server so I don't have to manually put in the DNS every time I connect to the network.

Does anyone know if ddwrt or dgteam can be installed on this, either now or in the future (with development)?

But you can change Windows DNS within the OS network settings. I use OpenDNS this way. I found their DNS servers more responsive than Virgin's

Just to jump on this thread about virgins internet speeds/realiablility/upload/downloads etc.

Has anybody checked to see what levels of packet lost you are experciencing ?? I am generally interested.

I have checked my 50mb Virgin line and at peak times i am having up to 70% packet lost :(

Also i have read on other forums, and have been told by a Virgin UK customer telephone rep, that even though you have unlimited internet access and downloads, this isnt actually the case !!! You are secretly capped, or thats what i was told when i phoned virgin, they actually told me that i had used my "monthly upload/download quoter" and was thus being capped LOL, when i mentioned that i should have unlimited uncapped internet access, she then politely told me that it then maybe down to being "traffic managed at peak times" LOL

I normally play COD4 and Black OPs, i have a lagometer on hand in the bottom right hand corner, so i can actually see all the lag spikes i receive. Last night Sunday 17th, my ping was shooting from 50s to 130s, literally warping all over the place, frustrating to say the very least, if they cant get 50mb right, how on hell will they get 100mb right ??

Virgin media in my view, is currently FAIL.

Moan and rant over, but would be interesting to hear if anybody else is having any of the above issues??

Kind regards

I play COD4 with the lagometer up and mine is pretty good with my 50mb, it just depends on when your local network is like, guess I am lucky.

My connection used to be really good nick, just recently at times it is woefull to say the least, normally i have a very low 20 or 30 ping, just recently though it has started to climb in terms of ping.

This is exactly the same situation i had years ago (ive been with Virgin for about 6 years) i had the 10mb line, was fantastic, then started to get ping spikes, so i upgraded to 20mb, was fine for a short while, then again ping spikes, so i upgraded again LOL. Its been fine for some time, but unfortunately i suffer bad ping spikes from time to time :(

I know the 100mb is being installed in my area in the next couple of weeks, so maybe they are giving me a crap service, so that i upgrade again LOL

I was also told that due to demand TV/phone/broadband in my area, that a lot of users are now being pushed through my exchange maybe that has something to do with crap pings, and being traffic managed :(

Glad your ping is good, at least they are getting in right somewhere LOL

Don't suppose that anybody has Virgin 50mb in the Clapham area? Getting it installed in a few weeks and am hoping it's not as crap as I am reading in here!

mines still going good :)

Marcus strangely enough when i go to speedtest mine is very simular, however when i complete a packet lost test, im shocked by the % loss.

My connection has certain days where it plays up. Sunday being the worst, and occasionally tuesday and wednesday when the football is on LOL

Plus having the lagometer running when gaming is awesome, as i can see exactly if it is server side or my connection. Unfortunately its normally my connection :(

i didnt do a pingtest last night shall have to be tonight as doing one at this time of day would be unfair

Has anyone upgraded from 20mb to 50mb and seen their gaming pings improve?

I'm getting pretty naffed off with WoW data being treated as P2P and was wondering if it was any better on the 50mb "unlimited" service.

Tell them you want to downgrade to a cheaper package. Tell them you are already with Sky on TV, telephone, mobile etc and can get economies of scale through their broadband service and just trying to save costs and not too fussed about the speed.

They will probably ask you to switch to VMs equivalent, you tell them you don't want to faf around with that.

They will then try to reduce the price of your existing contract. You ask them "out of curiosity" what speeds are you offering? 5mbit, 10mbit, 20mbit, 100mbit... 100mbit?? "Ooh didn't realise you were able to get to such speed. How much is that per month?"

Um and ah for a few moments. "Out of curiosity would you be able to do me a deal for the 100mbit? How much? Hmm still a bit steep. Any chance to reduce it further? (add in further hmm-ing and sighing)."

And take it from there. :p They will think they managed to convert a punter to staying with VM by their interest in the higher speed package when they originally and ironically called up to down grade their BB speed!

Not saying it will work 100% but it worked for my upgrade to 50mbit from 20mbit (was paying 19.50 and they charged me an extra pound a month i.e. 20.50).

And tbh, I am sure there are other elements which will allow you to get a better price, e.g. having been their customer for many many years.

And worse comes to worse you can say you will go away and think about it if you dont want your bluff called.
