Virgin Media Discussion Thread

has anyone been gaming on a SH5? I've been with BT for the last couple of years but it could be the year 3000 by the time they upgrade our area - in London FFS, so pretty dense population wise - to beyond 70mb.

I've noticed improvements in gaming using the SH5 over the SH3 in modem mode. That's just using the SH5 on its own aswell.

Only issue I have really with the SH5 currently is that for some reason my PC doesn't get a network connection for quite a while after it boots up. Sometimes it can be 30 secs to a minute. I've now put the SH5 in modem mode and I get a connection soon as PC boots up

Thanks for the reply Spudmaster. Are you wired or wireless?

To be honest (speaking as a SH5 user) I don't think you are realistically going to get better gaming performance on a DOCSIS connection vs. FTTC - the jitter and latency will be worse, even in the best case. Speed on the other hand, thats a different matter. Depends on what you are looking for really.

My VM 500Mb bb and landline contact expires end of the month and had an email saying the deal offer will renew at its default price from Jan, so from £54 a month to £69 a month!

Went onto livechat and spoke to an obvious bot first but then a human that felt like was a more advanced AI and I'm still unsure lol.

Anyway, got an upgrade to Gig1 with landline for £62 a month and mid next year when I switch from EE to o2, will go back onto livechat to activate the Volt discount to my account

They will be sending me a Hub 4 ad the person on the other end said the Hub 5 is still in the testing phase. I have my own router anyway though so either would be going right to modem mode.

Can't wait for the 29th!

I'm wired.

Anyone have any ideas as to why the SH5 would delay my network connection when PC is first turned on? Once its connected I can restart and the connection is there straight away but on first power on it can take 30 seconds to a minute for Windows to show my connection. At first I thought it was caused by a Windows update or because of Windows 11. But now gone back to modem mode and the connection has been working like normal again.

some of the best pings ever were back in the day when blueyonder ran their own gaming servers..

remember playing cs with a 8ms ping etc fun times

shame virgin took over and killed it

What's delayed? Does the NIC have a link but nothing works? Does the NIC not have a link? Check the lights on the NIC and switch port on the SH5. Some switch ports can take a while to come up, but that's not usually the case with SoHo kit.

It might be taking a while to negotiate speed and duplex. Try setting your NIC to 1000/full and see if that makes a difference.

I didnt check lights on the NIC and SH5 tbh. I just get the no connection globe symbol until it connects. I thought it was probably taking a while to auto negotiate so I set it to 1000 and 2.5gbps in Windows. Neither setting made a difference. When set to 2.5gbps Windows only showed 1000/1000 even though my board has a 2.5g LAN port and I was under the impression the SH5 has the same.

Only one port on SH5 is 2.5G

Have they though? I hwas playing CS just last week and had the lowest ping of 4 with one other guy on the whole server.

I don't think 4ms to a game server is possible on current implementation of DOCSIS with VM.
Sounds like a glitch to me. .

It was an EU server I randomly joined just looking for a server one night to play that had others on. I have no idea who the other person was but most people had pings of 8-20 whilst we had 4. I normally get around 12-16 on CS when playing during the daytime/early evenings but if it's really busy then it's around 20.

Just been on the phone with VM for over an hour and ready to throw myself off the roof lol

Problem - Wired Connection, PC on left, monitor in middle and Superhub 2 AC on right (running over 6 years 24/7)
World of Tanks, if I wait around for end of battle "Victory/Defeat" message the game will hang on that screen for a bit and I get booted to login screen with "Connection to server interrupted" as for some reason it cannot handle the handover from end of game to garage, this issue can be replicated without fail.

Router Mode = Disconnected.
Router Mode + Firewall Disabled = Disconnected.
Router Mode + VPN = Fine and a solid workaround for most but I don't have a VPN and shouldn't have to use this as an option. (Not done by me but others with same hub/ISP)
Router Mode + DMZ Set for PC = Game works fine, end of battle to garage transfer fine.
Modem Mode = Game works fine, end of battle to garage very quickly.
Modem Mode + External Router = Game works fine, end of battle to garage very quickly, as with VPN I do not have an external router. (Not done by me but others with same hub/ISP)

Hub replacement from Hub 2 to later hubs 3/4 by several others has completely resolved this issue and it can be left in router mode with no issues whatsoever, seems to be localized to hub 2 so outdated hardware/software maybe.

Otherwise the game works flawlessly, no issues driving around and shooting other tanks, go between menus fine, latency is 20-40, all solutions pretty much involve taking router mode out of the equation but according to their automated checks nothing is wrong with the equipment or connection despite me doing all the leg work and narrowing down the problem.

I know it isnt a forwarding issue because I played a few games, noted down every single port it used, added a few hundred to +/- from min/max range and opened them up and still have the same issue.

Thinking this is why I have so many map transfer timeouts on star trek online as well lately.
