Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Beenom (my brother) you are lucky using the ethernet cable while I am suffering poor wireless speed:mad:;)

I have found that since switching from Linksys WRT54GL router to Virgin Superhub, the wireless peformance has flopped:confused:. Btw I am using NetGear WN111v2 USB wireless adapter.

Could it be that superhub transmission of radio waves is weak and hence the frequency of waves reaching wireless adapter is weak?

So as Beenom stated, is it possible to use Linksys WRT54GL router instead of virgin superhub router or use the former with latter to transmit signals?

With my hub at least it isnt the wireless signal that is the issue, its the fact that having it switched on crashes the superhub constantly lol.

There's no reason why you cant use your wrt54gl alongside it. I've got a gigabit switch plugged in to my superhub. that switch serves my pc and consoles (all wired, obviously). I've also got my old wrt54g plugged in to that switch and this serves all my wireless devices. Doing this, with the wireless disabled on the superhub, the network has been solid. No wireless n, but it isnt really needed for my wireless devices.

no QOS until 29 firmware...

I dont think they will run you extra cables just to the point where you say "Hub goes here" Although a cup of tea and a twenty pound note might go a long way if you ask nice??"

Getting Virgin installed sometime around the end of the month/early September when I move into my new apartment!

Can't wait. Never had cable before and have lived with 4mbps here in the countryside. Think I'm gonna go for the 30Mb package at the minute and see how it goes.

£120 a month, Virgin should throw in a free Virgin for that amount of cash! I think you have a lot of bargaining power with virgin and free upgrades shouldn't be a problem.

You would think so but you would be wrong!

My bill is about £160 a month for tv, bb, and phone.

When I got TiVo I had to pay full whack for the install!

PC.

I pay £42.50 for 50 MB and phone, with Virgin.

I pay £35.50 to Sky, this is for Sky Movies, Sports and all the HD stuff.

I called Virgin to ask how much it would cost switching my TV to them, thinking it would save me money - not the case. They wanted a touch over £100 monthly for the Tivo service and £49.95 towards the box. They could save me around £12 a month for three months.

I explained that Sky have just frozen my offer of what I'm paying for the next 12 months and I asked if they could be more competitive and they couldn't.

I really want to switch to Virgin TV, so I can have one bill for everything, plus the on demand stuff is leaps and bounds ahead of Sky, also, no more rainy day no TV, but I'm loathe to pay an extra £20 odd quid a month for the privilege.

I pay sky £26 a month for 6 months offer at half price for everythings (Sports, Movies, 6 packs) plus free HD Pack for 3 months with ESPN as well. Then after 3 months ESPN revert it back to £9 a month while HD pack revert it back to £10.25, so I will paying the first 3 months at £26 then after that £45.25 for the next 3 remaining months before go back to normal price at £71.25 a month

100 meg is in my area now but I can't think the reason for having it yet, there are no restrictions on 50mb, I get good speeds around 5.95mb/s download, is it really worth the extra monthly charge for it.

I managed to haggle 50mb for 20mb prices for the time I have it so its a big jump for me really in price.
My bill is £71 a month for
50mb
XL tv
3x Samsung hd boxes
XL phone

Oh I also get a £22.50 reduction every month towards the broadband for some reason they keep allowing me to add it when I phone up :p

This seems high, I called to cut the package down losing all the tv side and the boxes, they told me they could do 50mb/phone/free box(freeview tv) all for £37.50, I would advise calling the cancellations part as they are UK based people, option 5 I think if you are moving home or thinking of leaving us.

I've got free evening and weekend calls which puts it up to £42.90.

Cancellations department can do everything for £88, so I'll see next month if Sky keep the discount and then switch if they can't. Hell I might just switch anyway, I really like the look of the TiVo box and to have everything on one bill would be easier.

£50/month, medium tv and tivo included. That's only weekend calls and not evening, but virgin allow you to mix and match quite happily and adding the weekend calls would be a few quid more.

I'm still stuck on a 10Mb connection using a Motorola SB5100 modem plugged directly into my PC via ethernet cable. I'd quite like to upgrade to the 50Mb service and have wireless connections for laptop, phone & TV, but after reading the horror stories about the Superhub I'm not so sure.

My priority is to have a reliable wired connection to my desktop PC. So, is the Superhub at least reliable enough for that ? ( can it be used purely as a modem now ? ) Anyone had a good experience with the wireless service , or what other 3rd party routers are recommended as an alternative?

i always found my stand alone modem and buffalo g54 to be much better.

the wireless range on the suphub alone is just truly truly pants.

And i have to reboot it from time to time where as the previous setup i didnt.

I'm running wired to my PC and it's fine.

Shortly leaving the world of 50/5MB... upgrade to 100/10MB coming with house move at the beginning of next month :D

Have to try and convince the VM engineer to leave me with my current modem/router... avoid the superhub!

Most engineers I've had are decent people.

I'm tempted to see if Virgin will allow me to use the old modem and buy a decent cable router.

Yeah i upgraded from 20mb to 50 last week and the engineer i had was a really nice chap down to earth.

He told me that a lot of customers were actually calling VM to see if they can have their old Modems back instead of this superhub which was a bit worrying,But so far my Super Hub has been great,I have however noticed that the wireless signal isnt as good as back when i was using my dedicated Netgear router so i might disable the Superhubs wireless and set my router up on it instead...hoping you can do that anyway...anyone tried it?
