Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Whats the problem exactly?

Call VM up, they are usually pretty good at sorting this stuff out.

Not if you're in an over-subscribed area they aren't :(

Frequently in Luton my 50MB comes to a crawl between 5pm and 8pm... plus sometimes on weekends... too many users sharing bandwidth.

Thankfully my new place doesn't suffer from this :D

Well right now, I'm currently using uTorrent and downloading a few games in Steam.

Download speed is at 7mb and upload is around 4mb.

Radio keeps skipping and mIRC keeps giving me lag warnings, every so often, there is a burst of text as it tries to catch up, last thing, web pages are slow to load, but reasonable.

This might seem like a stupid question but how the hell do you update the firmware? I haven't got any options to do it on mine :(

If you are using a superhub then the firmware will automatically update if required on power up. So if you turn it off and back on again if it needs an update it will install it then for you.

And refering to a post higher up yes 'most' techs are decent. Depends if they work direct for virgin or one of our contracting partners. Fujitsu have taken over now so things are slowly getting better on their side.

Oh yeah did I forget to mention im a VM tech :)

Hmm just got my superhub... It's running R26 which makes me angry! I want to use my DIR655 for the wireless N and the fact its awesome.

Don't seem to be upgrading the firmware when turned on /off.

r29 isnt released yet - it's not going to be shipped with a beta firmware.

so use it then. I'm using my wrt54g for wireless atm.

Shall give it a go, they stole my subnet ;) was using 192.168.0.1 for my network so I'll have to change all my DCHP reservations etc.

For reference, I'm on a 30Mb line (no up upgrade yet)

Ping seems a bit high, maybe it'll settle out.

When they release R29 for everyone the Superhub IP changes to 192.168.100.1 with modem mode enabled,so if you want to use the old IP again you can.

Since when is a ping of 25 high? :p

does anyone know how sucessful this "modem mode" is in disabling all their crap and making it purely a modem ?

Very successful, my Superhub in modem mode acts exactly like a modem would, it even disables the switch built into the Superhub, only one of the ports works now and my router gets the IP address and not the Superhub.

It's higher than mine! :p

thank you, that is a lot more encouraging .... had they stopped being stupid, and just issued a modem, then either a standard retail router, or a discount voucher for us to purchase a router ... it would have been simples ! and saved all this headaches !

Anyone having intermittant connection issues with the superhub?

I just downgraded fomr 50mb to 30md and since then ahve had nothing but connection problems. Starting to do my head in.

Its odd, intermittantly it refuses to connect but is really good when it does. This never happened once on 50meg. I can't help but feel they haven't changed my service correct or something

Genuine conversation i just had with Virgin tech support:

Virgin: And what operating system are you using?
Me: Linux
Virgin: I mean are you using Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7...
Me: I'm using Linux
Virgin: Sir I need for you to look on the case for your computer for a sticker that should tell you what version of Windows you have
Me: I need for you to look in your office for somebody else i can speak to.

He hung up on me in the end, although I think by accident as he was mid sentence.

Anyway rather than find out why my 2mb line was running at 512k, I just phoned and upgraded to 10mb. They said 24 hours. It took 10 seconds for the changes to take effect.

Honestly i know people have had crappy Virgin experiences, but mine have all been superb. I must just be in a great location for it.
