Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I'm currently on 10 meg with Virgin so what's the score with upgrading to 50 meg?

When I spoke to them on the phone then mentioned I would need a new cable modem and that an engineer would need to come out to the property. What does the engineer do change the cabling or purely install the new modem.?

That's all he does. Check to see if you can do a self-install like I did and then ask for a self-install Kit not just the SH be firm here with them.

Ah OK.

So I could get a new cable modem but say No to the hub or am I missing something? Would prefer to use my own router.

No..You will get a super Hub either way. Ask them if you can have a self-install kit and not just a super hub
then you won't need a tech coming to your place and lose time off work.
Then call VM to activate the super hub and your good to go.

In the self-install kit you get 3X4ft cables to connect the SH to a VM outlet+30ft of Cat5e cable+ a 3 way splitter and cover.

Edit=you can use your own router if you want to just set the SH to modem mode.

Well the cabling is already there so its a case of just swapping the router over then?

So it's beginning to look like overutilisation is the cause of my problems, students are back in my area and it's certainly showing, 26% packet loss this evening.

I have a word of advice for anyone who wants to get VM, check http://community.virginmedia.com vigorously to spot any trends in your area.

Just had a technician come out to fix mine which just hasn't been working. Came into the house, ran a test on the cable what plugs into the modem (don't know what it called)

A number was -11 while it's meant to go from 0 to 0-10, ran down to the exchange, replaced whatever. Came back, speeds were like 10Mb/s. Replaced it with a superhub, rang up to get the MAC put it place. 10 minutes later it worked.

If he couldn't get it to work he said a area fault guy would have to come out, theres 8 for the whole of Thames Valley, while there is 40 of what he is. Apparently as well CS is coming back to the UK, though it will be like 12 months atleast due to redundancies etc.

He was meant to finish at 7 today, he left here at 6:30, got to drive 20 minutes to the next house, then like another 40 to the next place, then another 45 ish back home. Though it seems like he's been back and forth all day between places, crazyy.

Sounds like a normal working day mate, 8am start and finish when the jobs get done, its madness. Where I work we get 11 minutes travel time.

When he checked the fly lead with his signal meter the fact that one level was -11dBmv probably didn't matter as it wouldn't have been a broadband frequency and broadband carrier frequencies sit 10dBmv higher. He was just doing which any good tech would do which is make sure your levels were perfect before trying other things.

Good techs always finish late :)

Yeah, said like 20 minutes per job as well.

Seems fine though my mumble has D/C a few times, net seems fast though it just went all slow and wasn't able to load a site. Just pinging the bbc website constantly now to see if things are going fine..

My download speeds have plummeted since the students returned to Exeter - only getting 550Kb/s now on a 30Meg line. Was getting 3mb/s minimum before they all got back after the summer :(

Particularly bad in the evenings.

Complain to BBC watchdog that's what most people are doing.

I've just got the 30mb package, I believe it uses the same superhub so hopefully someone can help me out!
When we first installed the hub it was great for about 4 days, good speeds at about 28mbps. After the 4 days we got a lot of trouble connecting and super slow speeds of about 0.1 mbps. The range of the router is also diminished.

We've been on the phone to virgin a number of times but they have not been able to sort out the problem. They have tried various things, I cant remember much but switching channels was one of them.
We had an appointment for an engineer but they cancelled it and told us the whole thing was an area issue and it would be resolved.

The thing is that the hub is ok if you are wired to it, its the wireless that is appalling! So I don't know how it is an area issue!?

Anyone know of anything I can do to sort the problem?
Many Thanks

if its only on wireless speeds go down its a wireless prob, might be worth getting a better wireless unit and put the superhub in wireless mode or maybe some powerplug adaptors, ive been on 50mb since last sat and have not seen any slow down atm so very happy! good luck!:D
