Virgin Media Discussion Thread

The speed increase is such a con to get new customers. You cant use it as you will be capped. Virgin would be better spending the money improving the bandwidth so you can have a truly unlimited connection. But that does not attract customers big numbers do...

'better' in what sense? The only person that would be better for is torrentheads. It would completely wreck the network for everyone else and cost an absolute fortune.

I bought Dead space pack on steam which is a 16GB download. I had to wait until after 9pm to download or I will be capped.
It would be nice if I could just download this when I wanted rather than being dictated by the network.

so you're on a lesser product telling people 50Mbps isn't unlimited when it is?? :/

edit: not withstanding the p2p shaping that affects everyone and chronic congestion in some areas. :p

Thats pretty much the reason I upgraded to 50mb after the Steam Christmas sale.

I'm on 50MB

I was dropped from 50MB to 30MB then after complaining I was upgraded to 50MB for no extra charge. The guy on the phone said that 50MB is capped up until 9pm if I download too much and after 9 it's unmonitored.

I have downloaded during the day and been speed capped and nothing after 9PM... I don't use P2P..

Taken from the VM 50mb info page..

I do not know what VM are playing at, trying to attract more customers. Their existing infrastructure is not just full: is bursting at the seams with just the current load. I've had more problems with my VM connection due to a simple oversubscribed UBR than with any other similar service I've had in the past.

They just keep taking on new customers, but don't seem to be investing in their network.

50Mbps isn't affected by that policy. but now you've been dropped to 30Mbps, you will be....

faster upload areas have a limit on uploads:

oops, i missed the part about you upgrading again.

in that case i have no idea. i've just not seen anyone else complain about limits on 50Mbps or above. :o

and i'm only on 30Mbps myself so i haven't seen it first hand. the limits are more than enough for me. :p

It's expected to cost them £110m by the end of the rollout which is planned some time next year - thats quite an investment.

anyway, got this last night:

Hi James,

Good news - we're giving you even faster broadband, for less.

You're already getting the UK's fastest widely available broadband, and starting this summer we'll be starting the roll-out to boost your speeds from up to 100Mb to up to 120Mb. We'll also be lowering the price of your broadband package in April to match the price of our 50Mb Broadband XXL packages.

These are nice extras we do to make you smile. We call them Virgin Media tickles, and we only give them to people we know and like - our customers.

I'm not on 100mb but i though ooh maybe they've got it wrong and i'll get 120mb and a price reduction.

Then I got this:

Hello there,

Oops! That last email, 100Mb Broadband Announcement, was sent in error.

Please ignore this, and rest assured current Virgin Media Cable Broadband customers will be receiving some good news about their broadband in the next 2 weeks. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

The Virgin Media team

Balls :p

No you won't.
And all those on below 50mb service get there quotas doubles, so not only do they get a massive speed usage, they get to download twice as much before being throttled. So how is it a con? And why can't you use it?

Customers with Broadband size: 100 (100Mb) – your usage excluding file sharing traffic (see below) is unaffected.

Customers with Broadband size: XXL (50Mb) – your downstream usage excluding file sharing traffic (see below) remains unaffected and we'll soon be increasing your upload speeds from 1.5Mb to 5Mb. However during peak times we'll need to slow you back to 1.75Mb if your upload usage is particularly high.

At peak times we also slow down the speed of file sharing traffic – that's services like Limewire, Gnutella, BitTorrent and Newsgroup (Usenet) traffic. You will, of course, still be able to use these services, but downloads and uploads will take longer during these peak periods. See our full Traffic Management Policy here.
I get amazing download speeds and it's great.
Just don't use p2p
