Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Found my connection is dropping down to massively in the evening. Haven't exceeded my cap but newsgroups are horrendously slow. Unless it is traffic shaping newsgroup stuff?

Ooops just read the post above, seems they are traffic shaping newsgroups.

My connection has been pretty steady for last few weeks

thats the best ive every seen it............

but connection dropped out for about an hour this afternoon, and now looks like this

I do not know what VM are playing at, trying to attract more customers. Their existing infrastructure is not just full: is bursting at the seams with just the current load. I've had more problems with my VM connection due to a simple oversubscribed UBR than with any other similar service I've had in the past.

They just keep taking on new customers, but don't seem to be investing in their network.

Most areas are fine though.

Still waiting for them to upgrade my upload speed (since 2010?) and make 100mb available in my area. Guess it'll be a while before the doubling arrives.

How are people's connections in Edinburgh?

Mines considtently 30.5 on a 30meg connection an I've never had one but of lag on bf3 online yet. Different story to what I see most folk have :S

Depends on what area you're in

My 30Mb was fine last week. Now it's unusable again now the Bristol/UWE students are back. They piloted a 9 month contract scheme to get all the student business but now anyone in Bristol with VM finds the internet pretty useless after 6PM weekdays and all day at the weekend.

For example mine is currently running at 0.55Mb/s down, 0.86Mb/s up

WHAT A JOKE. Only have to wait another week till my contract can be waived (You have to have a recurring problem for a month - and the idiot I spoke to back in October never bothered to register my complaint)....

That's utterly crap, though I know what it's like. Talktalk basically put us on the exact same speed when we said we were cancelling. I was about pulling my hair out at a week of that. Couldn't even load a web page. Hope and pray my virgin stays as good as it's been the last 2 months

)....

Shocking, mines currently 19.75/1.75 but that's limited by wifi. What part of Bristol are you in? Gues I've always been lucky with virgin and don't seem to be in such areas. (horfield/lockleaze border)

I'm in Clifton.

I was mistaken though. It's not 0.55Mb/s down atm. It's 0.46

Woot.

Just completed my order for BT Infinity though. The street cabinet is quite literally on the other side of the road to my house so I will definitely get 40/10. Gets installed in two weeks :D

Now I just need to make enough fuss to get my contract waived with Virgin. What a waste of money this has been!

To be fair 18 months ago when I had the normal 20Mb at my old house things were fine. They've just oversold their service. AND they are making the exact same mistake again with this upgrade.

It's all a desperate knee jerk reaction to try and make their services "Faster" than BT. On paper, sure, in reality.... NO.

that very much depends on area and it was already significantly faster, 40mb for BT 100for virgin. Cabinets have to be upgraded, so everyone, including over subscribed areas, should see a good speed increase.

Sure, depending on your area. In my area, no. Their current infrastructure is not capable of supporting 30/1.5 in Bristol at the moment because of the sheer volume of traffic, created by their large increase in customers.

130 million for upgrades is great, but I should imagine that initial upgrades MAY fix things by increasing capacity. But as soon as the 60Mb rolls out (Which to be fair won't be for ages in Bristol - we've been waiting for the upload upgrades for a long time) the problem will revert back again.

It's simple numbers really. The total bandwidth available across Bristol is currently considerably less than the total of everyone's connections. Even friends from work who have 50Mb suffer the same issues.

When 30Mb works, and works properly, I wouldn't consider needing any more bandwidth. There's nothing you can't do with 30Mb and downloading large amounts of data is not exactly slow.

I simply find the entire thing rather pointless and a big PR stunt which will continue bandwidth problems in my area.

I don't suffer I'm from Bristol.
Most people with higher speeds won't upper their usage. However the infrastructure with this upgrade will be able to handle more.
Several areas in Bristol have had the upload upgrade as well.

So it really does depend on the area and not a blanket Bristol issue.
Mainly heavy student areas. Saying that had very few issues in Cotham when I lived down that way.

Upload upgrade is April for me. And apparently the doubling in speed June/july.

Well good for you but where I am in Clifton the service has been terrible. Same story with my old house mates still living in Montpelier. Same story with my friends in Redland.

I would happily stay with Virgin if it works, as the contract is shorter and it is cheaper. But they are incapable of providing a service I am happy with in the area.

My point was that it's not just a marketing ploy. Many areas are fine and even in bad areas throuput will Improve.

Current utilisation issues are said to be scheduled for resolution prior to the double speed migration, here's hoping.

Got 100Mbps installed... So far so good

Well got my Virgin 100Mbps running now.
Engineer came around 10 am was done by 11:30.
Been testing around and Speedtest.net is only showing 62 Mbps but Thinkbroadband hitting up to 91 Mbps lol... :(
