Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Newsgroups are throttled by port, if you're with a good provider such as Astraweb then some of the more bespoke ports aren't throttled. This however means no SSL during peak hours :(

I was getting throttled to 8mbit on all SSL ports, the only TCP port I don't get throttled on is 1818 on Astraweb :)

I use SSL on port 443 and it's not throttled at all at any time, on 50mb. With Supernews.

same here too on astraweb. I've never been throttled for downloading using SSL
I'd assume it depends on how utilised your area is, I didn't start getting throttled until about 4 months ago but I found on every port other than 1818 I was getting 8mb solid whereas 1818 shot straight up to 111mb.

If certain ports are throttled, why not just change them? Tell your software to use port 9864 or something random instead.
Astraweb only provide a set variety of ports.

Hi people. Was upgraded today from 10 to 50meg with the superhub.

Engineer turned up at 1:30 and left at 5:30 not working.
Another engineer was called for backup but nothing can be done.

The hub just flasshes and then looks as if it gives up and tries to connect over and over.

Jumping onto the hub and viewing the hub status it says

Network access - Denied

Connection

Aquired down stream 299000000 hz locked

Downstream channels

Locked
Modulation QAM256
Channel id 198
Max raw bit rate 55616000 kbit/sec.
Freq 29000000
Power 45.5 dbmv
Snr 42.0 db

Upstream

Lock status Locked
Modulation atdma
Channel id 3
Max raw bit rate 20480 kbit/sec
Freq 35800000 hz
Power 58.2 dbmv

Can anyone see an issue

Thanks
Rob.

Have you phoned up Virgin Media and given them the MAC address of the Superhub?

Sometimes the engineer does this, but sometimes not.. when i received my Superhub i had to phone a specific activation number to get my MAC address authenticated on the network.

Thanks for the quick reply jimaroo.

Yes the engineer tried 2 hubs and phone the mac addresses through. I called
Virgin about an hour ago to see if they can do anything. They checked
It ha the right mac and it had been activated. Modem doesnt appear to sync :(

Moved the hub nearer the point in the building
Its synced but im getting 11 meg download and
4 meg upload :?

At least i know it works and i can surf a bit.

Hope engineer turns up sat but also booked one for
Monday.

Who at Virgin can I email to help fix my connection? It's been going on for for a long time now, changing the cable has made no change. I'm starting to get really annoyed with them.
