Virgin Media Discussion Thread

According to the guy I spoke to I am only charged £20, I did ask if it was still only £20 and he said yep (as apposed to £50 - £20 for engineer + £30 for activation)

I just checked my bill, it's £20 activation + £30 for the installation.
So it looks like they are not charging the install. I was initially told that it was free install (under the free installs promo as an install waas required rather than a speed upgrade which was a config push) then I got told I would be charged it after all.

I might kick up a bit and see what happens. They already messed this bill up as it's missing a referal £30 I was just waiting for it to be paid before I contacted them

Up to 20Mb speed

Dazzling download speeds: get a music track in less than 2 seconds5, or download a whole 1.6GB film in less than 12 minutes.
Unlimited downloads1

All our fibre optic broadband packages come with unlimited1 downloads. So surf to your heart's content - you'll never have to worry about going over the limit.

Virgin media need sorting out we all know 20mb has stm and clearly right here when you sign up says it's unlimted , how do they get away with stuff like this ?

While I hate companies playing on words, it is technically ‘unlimited’, but ‘capped’ in effect this is the same thing to the consumer, but Virgins line is you can always download (i.e. its not 10GB a month limit). Again I don’t like it, but that’s Virgins line…

Sorry to trouble you guys, didn't want to start a new thread. Got my Virgin 50mb yesterday, they forgot to give me the wireless N dongle, I am connecting to the router from my old laptop and I am only gettings 1 mb up / 1 mb down, is this due to not having the dongle?

Thanks

How are you connecting from the Laptop? Wireless G? You should be getting more than that even on Wireless G.

Have you tried wired connection?

I must admit, I did not try a wired connection to my laptop, wired connection to my desktop I get 48.8mb.

Will try tonight with it wired and see how fast it is.

The laptop is about 5cm away from the router, would this effect anything?

Cheers mate

Call 150 for free and tell them or go on the VMs newsgroups and post there and they will post you one.

ummm....

I just called to upgrade and they said they cannot give me it at £28 until Sept as they don't have the discount codes for it at the moment.

I then explained that I know several people have already got it at the discount price and their reply was " that's impossible, the discount is not even valid yet".

So...they wouldn't give me it at the discount price, grrrr

Might have missed this somewhere so apologies for asking again - does someone *really* need to visit the premises to get this installed? Can't they just send their router and modem without having to do the visit?

I recently had a VM chap try to 'fix' the TV, he replaced the horrendous Scientific Atlanta box, with yet another box of the same kind and now 18 channels don't work and it's still awfully slow and unuseable. So I wouldn't want any of their knowledge less engineers to visit since hooking up a modem is dead simple.

Phoned up and asked myself a few months back, from what they said they don't allow self installations. I thought this was strange as all I need is a new modem and they did it in the past when the service was upgraded and modems needed to be replaced.

My guess would be they want to charge the installation fee regardless of it being needed or not. Although I guess it doesn't matter with the free installation some people are getting, so I'd just bite the bullet and get it installed by one of their guys. A pain I know, but a small price to pay 50Mbit.

Maybe they'll remove that requirement for a visit when they officially change the product prices in the next few weeks.

ADSL companies charge an activation fee, although the users sets it up themselves. It's probably even easier for VM to activate :)

I very much doubt it, I think when they upgraded the service to 20Mbit, it would have costed too much to have an engineer sent out to millions of households who needed a new modem to take advantage of the extra speed. With new customers or upgrades they prefer to inspect the setup and hardware themselves before activating the 50Mbit service, that way they can be sure it will work to full capacity and customers are pleased with their flagship product.

Not strictly speaking true. The engineer is supposed to adjust the power levels in the cabinet as too much signal can overdrive the modem causing problems, but I've only heard of a couple of installs where this has actually happened.

Well I finally was able to sort out getting 50Mbit, had to mail the Chief Executive Officer and complain but now I got the following

. 1 month free Virgin

. 50Mbit

. No engineer charge or activation fee

. wireless router and dongle (no tthat I need them)

. an actual specific time for the engineer to turn up and not inbetween certain times.

. Confirmation the price reduction in Sept and that this will be the first bill I get (after my month free)

Happy now
