Virgin Media Discussion Thread

You can't not want it because of how it is for someone in a certain area you need to find out how it is by you, maybe you missing out on a great service.

Agreed. I had a few teething problems at first but since then it's been rock solid, and I get 6mb/sec from Astraweb the vast majority of the time :)

I tried cable in my area 4yrs ago and it was a nightmare from start to finish....all the same problems as the previous poster.

Its why i went back to a slower, more reliable DSL....

My 50 meg is still going strong, it picked up over christmas to an acceptable level, cos the students buggered off, now they're back, and the good old reliable virgin 50meg service is back...

Cant even do a pingtest.net because it lags out as we have OVER 90% PACKET LOSS!!!

ARGGGHHH i hate virgin media so much. If i knew the people who were directly responsible for refusing to invest in any server equipment in newcastle i would happily stamp on their head until they died. I feel it would help me feel slightly better.

Literally cant even load websites, especially on weekends, like when was that speedtest i posted? about half an hour ago or something? it has taken that long for me to load these forums and post this. It is an absolute joke.

For anyone going to Newcastle University if you somehow come across this thread when googling if virgin media is good.. IT'S NOT! it's the worst service ever!

Edit: Internet is picking up slightly as it gets deeper into the early hours of the morning, managed to actually complete a pingtest

a sterling result i'm sure you'll agree.
Man what i wouldn't give for some adsl. My o2 at home is unbelievable perfect, i get grade A on pingtest to Los angeles!
Copper wire till i die...and i will be dead before i ever buy anything from virgin media again, hell even if they offered me everything for free i would still refuse it. 56K dial-up is actually better than 50meg, which you think is hyperbole, but its genuinely true. at least you never got packet loss, you could online game on dial-up...not on virgin.

I'm at Newcastle Uni, in my student flat we use Be* (Jesmond Exchange), excellent 20mbps (~2.2MiB/s throughput) on ADSL2+. Perhaps you should consider them as they've been reliable and consistently fast, ~22ms ping to most UK sites during term time or otherwise.

4 years is a long time ago maybe you should find out from locals if its any better now, might have had network upgrades etc.

Well where I live the service is an absolute joke.

A quick look on the VM support newsgroup can be a good idea too for gauging what it is like in your area, people generally only post on there when they have a problem and at the moment in my area there are an awful lot of people with the same issue it would seem.

Yeh we have wanted to go with them as soon as we realised how terrible virgin were, but 12 month contract says we cant. But now because its been so long and we've complained to regulatory bodies, upon fear of us suing them they have made us a deal. I would like to personally thank Billy from virgin who replied to my friend on twitter and has actually helped us no end. The 1 single virgin employee who knows anything at all and actually cares. He deserves a promotion...to a better company.

But we get to keep our tv package, but he is cancelling internet and phone for us, and crediting our account for the months we have received little to no internet, this is over £200 credit so basically we have 6 months left here, we will have free tv for 4 of it covered by credit. We have reactivated the bt line and currently in the process of ordering Be. Billy from virgin says he will arange deactivation of our internet for the same day we get Be so we dont lose service. He is my hero and I CANNOT ******* WAIT TO HAVE ACTUAL INTERNET!!!!!!!!

words cant describe how happy i am that we dont have to put up with virgin anymore. I'd quite like to play some cod right about now, lets see if i can....

...nope doesnt look like it.

I'm so happy right now at the prospect of being able to play games and watch iplayer whenever i want, we can now watch youtube during the day!!! im so unbelievably happy, i will never go near virgin media ever again.

Be rocks. I only get 10mb but recieve excellent pings and customer service.

I'm just up Claremont Road in Newcastle, on 20MB Virgin, it's been pretty good overall. Had a few outages since we moved in July, but you could probably count them on one hand.

I wouldn't put too much stock in that site Cooper. I'm on 50 meg and get 6MB/sec downstream 24/7, rock solid. That site reckons my download speed is 2.5 Mbps lol :o

Lol...i just checked up on speeds in my area using this...

http://www.top10-broadband.co.uk/speedtest/streetstats/#home_London_download_0_all_all_3_1

13 test results in my area, 8 during the daytime, 5 in the evening, and guess what....

Averaging 7-8mb daytime, 1-2mb evening.....

Guess things havent changed that much in 4yrs....still the same old overloaded UBR's....

Think i'll stick with DSL....
Better off downloading some large files via their FTP, as this will give you the speed from their network, so any slow websites do not give a false reading.

My solid 6MB/s+ 50Mb says 3.1Mb :P

LOL That pretty much confirms that their server is way too overloaded to be any kind of useful speed test. Even at this time of night they can only allow a 50 meg connection to pull 3.1Mbps; that's pretty dire considering the site's stated aim. :o

My service has been dire since november. I saw 90% packet loss this week, pings well over 150 ms the norm. Already had a guy round, power levels fine, there is a known fault in my area. Yeah ******* oversubscription is the fault. They have no official fix date nor do they seem to care that much. Such a shame as last year it was rock solid with fantastic pings. Moment the students came back here it got about 50x worse too. Contemplating getting at least a months money back. It's been unusable. Only real reason I'm on cable was for the low pings and high speed for online gaming. Their download policy is rubbish, so wasn't for general speed really. Just response.

I sure hope it's sorted soon or I'm going to go crazy if pages don't start loading properly (or at all) soon. It's dog slow.

Looks like about half their customers have been experiencing massive issues like mine since late last year. I do wonder what's really going on here. It seems as though they just stopped expanding the network entirely, but continued to take on more customers.

Anyone else getting terrible service besides those who have posted already?

anyone in sheffield struggling atm, or is it just me?
I live very close to brammall lane, and have called virgin twice about it this week, and its been terrible stability wise...

I'm on a Netgear WNR2000 router, (which I've tried switching for an identical one, although has been fantastic for the past 6 months) and I'm getting packet loss, pings of well over 100 and jitter of usually about 150...

its a shame, as we've had nothing but great service for the past 6 months...

I can't log into my email shortly after "email upgrades". Anyone else with same problem. I'm near Maidstone. Also there is no option but to phone up if u have a problem. Did they close the newsgroups help group?

the phone line is the most important thing from what i learned. as i got 20m but only 8m max coz the stupid exchange is too far away from my home.

That's ADSL2+ mate, not cable. :) They're completely different things. Cable isn't affected by distance to exchange, in fact it doesn't even use the exchange or phone lines.

We keep getting pointed in different directions for our issues, but our line is apparently only hitting high utilisation for approximately 6% of the day,
a sunday call to Virgin seems like a heavily wasted effort too, speaking to people on a weekday, during normal working hours, yeah, sure they're usually helpful and intelligent people... My sunday call ended up going through to someone who I'm not sure could actually spell "Cable".
Ah well.
