Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Had my 50mb installed for a week now, and its been faultless so far with good speeds -

This seems like the right place to ask:

Are anyone else's torrents being throttled? I am downloading from http/ftp at full speed and browsing and gaming are fine, but torrents have suddenly stopped going faster than 25k/sec. I think it's capped because it stays between 23 and 25 constantly on any and every torrent. Absolutely nothing has changed on my end and it has been like this for a few days now.

I found a thread on the uTorrent forums here that seems to confirm Virgin are now aggressively throttling and not just imposing their usual five hour restrictions. This is going to be a pain.

Are you on 50 meg? I haven't used torrents in years but I fired up uTorrent portable and grabbed Ubuntu 9.10 x64 to test it out for you. I'm running a couple of other downloads (HTTP) in the background and the LAN is getting hammered atm, but I still got around 2.5 to 3.5 MB/sec. All things considered I'd say between the extraneous background downloading and the crappy VM-supplied DIR-615 we can safely assume I'm not being throttled.

I'm presuming you're on 20Mbps or below?

EDIT: Just gone back into the uTorrent window after writing this. Definitely not being throttled.

I'm on 10Mbps. I know it's subject to throttling after hitting a download limit, but I'm getting full download speeds on everything but torrents.

Interesting, thanks for the heads up. I've been doing some tests and I have no problems maxing out my 20mb connection on torrents (2.3Mb/s - 2.4Mb/s). I guess if they are throttling torrent they aren't throttling everyones as of yet.
 
i tempted to swtich to virgin out of interest though i been told that virgin only cabel upto the greybox at top of your street the rest of the way to house is normal line.

did virgin tell you what speed you will get before you signed up, and were they close to actual speed(ofc 50meg could mean you only get 7 meg, like skys 20 meg turns out to be)

You're right, it's FTTC (fibre to the cab). But unlike ADSL (which is basically fibre to the exchange, then copper phone wire to your house) cable have cabs that are much more local - usually one per block or sometimes street - and then run coaxial cable to your house. It's capable of way more bandwidth than phone cable, and if you buy 50 megs, you'll generally GET 50 megs.

It's not distance limited as is ADSL. Don't worry about it. :)
 
Virgin are having problems all over the place it seems. My 20Mb currently averages 40% packet loss and 516ms ping.

Seems I'm not the only one. The Virgin network can't cope with current demand and the "estimated" issue fix time for this is 29th March for Bristol.

LOL they call it "Fibre Optic Broadband", what a joke. I can't believe they can get away with that, it is a fibre-coaxial network :S

These look to be general network problems, or just certain areas?

Yeah the latency atm is taking the ""**"*, better today but last 3 days have been shocking, any online game has ping spikes every second, very annoying.
 
Yep, oversubscription in Bristol is rife. I've been moaning about it since november, it's still not right, though this week the packet loss has got better (was 95% at times), now only up to 20% at peak times.

Ping is still crazy though, can't online game at all from about 4PM to 1AM. Always getting kicked for ping. Really, really tired of that now, but they don't seem to want to do anything fast about it.
