Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Can't wait.

works out within a few £ of what I pay for sky, but 50mb rather than 3.5mb :D

I use steam, d2d and impulse a lot these days, films on lovefilm streaming beta and voddler beta. Be great to have stuff in stupidly quick time.
And of course NASA and F1 live feeds.

Just got it in my fiancee's house. Had to switch to openDNS because the Virgin DNS wasn't keeping a connection for very long.

Everything fine now and regularly get at least 45meg from most websites :D

I'm having terrible trouble with mine at the moment. My 50MB rarely goes about 10MB, but it is quick enough to play COD online, so I will think myself lucky!

We've got another engineer comming round tonight, so we'll see what happens.

I can also agree that the DIR-615 is rubbish. 2 of the ethernet ports have just stopped working for no real reason...

I'm still sat waiting for them to upgrade our UBR, had 6 months solid service before january, could fault it, nearly perfect line for gaming, streaming downloading, even with 6 of us using the line, since january though, we've been lucky to have less that 40% packet loss between about 9am and 3am, and have been told on the newsgroups that our connection won't be sorted till the end of april... :(

Unfortunately because we're students and are up and out in July there isn't really much option for us but to sit and wait...

hmm, well so far so bad...

50mb was due to be installed on the 26th and an engineer was due to come fix my tv today because the tv on demand was'nt working.

so my engineer arrives today and swiftly replaces the set top box and leaves. So i go back to playing star trek online, but uh oh limited connection, i go call virgin after i try a few modem restarts etc, virgin say they will send an engineer out on monday(urghhhhh!!!!), so after the call i go to http://192.168.100.1/ and i see i am getting 50mb speeds through, but as i only have a 20mb modem, it doesnt support 50mb.

so for some reason when the engineer put in the new v box he also some how enabled the 50mb service, so i call them back havign figuered out the problem MYSELF and they say they can send the engineer out on tuesday to fit the new moden for 50mb.

im hoping this will be the last of my troubles with 50mb.

(posting using isc from my win mo phone)

it is, as i said using my phones connection through isc to my pc. this is what im left with till tuesday!!!

Well reading a lot of peoples opinions on the 50meg it doesnt seem like upgrading to 50meg now is such a good idea or what are peoples opinions from the South East area anyway? if their is any that is :p, as my 20meg line is usually fine but i've heard people say they had a perfect 20meg line, then they upgraded to 50meg and then it just wasnt as fast, whereas others have said their 50meg has been great, so I really dont wanna upgrade and risk messing up my connection even if it is a faster speed of course, but thank you for any help/any opinions anyway :D

Does anyone know how much more it is to add 50mb to an existing VIP pack?

I'm going to have to get an engineer out soon anyway (modem disconnects for 15 minutes to 1 hour plus every few days), so i'm thinking about moving up :)

Im not sure about the VIP pack Werewolf, but I was just on the 20mbit at £19.50 a month and got upgraded to 50mbit at the cost of an extra pound. I.e. £20.50 a month.

Definitely worth a phone call and haggle over.

i just got connected to the 50meg package today and im well pleased with it :D
had a couple of disconnections today for about a hour after the guy went but its sorted its self out now

Personally been with cable broadband since NTL days of 2002 and it's been nothing but mega solid bar a couple of minor outages. I've always been on the mid package which I believe went from 256kb > 512kb > 1mb > 2mb > 4mb > 10mb. I'm still on 10mb and to be honest anything more I can't really justify as if I ever want something quick it's perfectly fast enough and even HD torrents complete overnight with ease. Pings are always low but admittedly I don't analyse them in detail every minute.

Are you pretty much guaranteed the advertised speed with VM? Of course its impossible to guarantee, but does the distance from the exchange matter much?

Moving house soon (hopefully!) and the exchange the house is linked to only has Virgin Media, which is fine cause i was going to go with them anyway (everything like TV, Phone and Broadband).

Virgin cable isnt done to the exchange. THey have there little mini exchange things (green cabs) on every or every other street. You connect to there so you get pretty much no loss on the line.

I used to get 2mb through the bt phone line with pings of 70, now i get 20mb and pings of 15-20 :D

Ahh i see. That sounds good!

Another thing though, i type the post code of the house we are hoping to go to into the Virgin Media website, but the house number doesn't appear on the list. The house number is '3', although number '5' which is next door is there. Does that mean that the cable just isn't installed on it and when i order it will be?

The house is only about 2 years old, so i would have thought it would be able to get cable. Its in a cul-de-sac type development and pretty much all of them have cable installed, bar a couple like number 1, 3 and a couple others.

I'd say your are right in assuming VM website is only showing houses that have already been connected.

When I lookup my address it shows gaps in the numbers ever couple of houses. They laid fiberoptic cable around her over ten years ago so everyone has the option to join.
I'd put money on it you'll be able to get VM, they'll just have to pull a cable from the green cab to your house.

I hope so. Would seem strange that the person next door could get it but i can't. The houses were all built around the same time i believe, so it should be possible.

From what I've seen of VM or any previous name they traded under they would cable to the district boundry not stop at the end of one street - before someone shoots me down I'm just saying thats my experience of them ;)

If they needed to pull a cable from the green cabinet, would that not involve digging up the street? Or can they pull it from next door over to mine?
