If they needed to pull a cable from the green cabinet, would that not involve digging up the street? Or can they pull it from next door over to mine?

You should see a small cover about 3 to 4 inches square on the pavement between two perperties, it should look like the water stop valve cover, VM will have run ducting along the street placing a cover like this on the boundery between every two houses. They will pull the cable from the nearest green box to this cover and then all they have to do is dig a narrow trench about six inches wide and it should be a foot or so deep, they'll dig this from the small cove down your garden to the wall where they will install a grey box.

Tried looking on Google Street view but couldn't really see anything lawlz :D

Ill have to take a look round the area to see where the nearest green box and that small water style cover (have actually seen them around the city before) are.

I'd advise anyone to be wary of claims that you're pretty much guaranteed to get the full xxmb with VM. I'm on the 50 service and I haven't managed anything over 30mb for well over three months now.

Completely at my wit's end with it now. Strange that I used to max it out when I had my iMac, now I'm getting nowhere near it with my new Windows machine.

Have you logged this with VM? What investigations and actions have been carried out? I only ask because on the one hand you warn people about the service, yet on the other pretty much admit it's probably your own setup at fault.

Where did I admit that? I'm saying it's strange.

I'm currently wired directly to the modem and this system has Gigabit ethernet. There's no reason at all why I shouldn't be getting the full 50mb speeds.

As for investigations and actions, if anyone more informed than I am can let me know what I could try to resolve it, I'll try it.

If he was getting full speed via his Mac then something on his Win box or else the connection itself is likely at fault. Especially since it's lasted three months or so. Ant84, call VM and log a fault (anything under 40Mbps is classed as a fault) - get an engineer out and see what they say.

Post your modem stats (including power levels and SNR) and your modem logs (remove your MAC addresses from them), and you may also want to do the same on the Cable Forums. VM staff often post on there and they're pretty good with troubleshooting.

I wasn't being funny in my earlier post; I was simply saying it's not fair to warn people about the 50Mbps service if you've had poor speeds for three months and not reported it and tried to resolve it. :)

Hi iam going to have vm 50 mb bb installed on the 24 feb and just want to no if they would install the router in one of my flats bedrooms or is this a prob?. thanks

Hey guys, thanks for the responses so far. Here's the result from Speedtest.net.

That's the fastest result I've had since around October 2009.

Reality Bites, I'm downloading using Sabnzbd via Astraweb. I'm getting around 4Mb/sec download speeds at best so that seems about right for circa 30mb.

Just quickly in addition, how do I find my modem data to post here? I'm not really well up on networking stuff so you might have to point me in the right direction!

Been in touch with VM tonight.

Asked to be upgraded to 50mb for an extra £8 a month aswell as a £55 activation fee on top of my mate's rate package.

Will be paying £40.50 for XL TV (x2) XL Phone and XXL Broadband :D

Apparently though they are waiting for some more activation codes or something and as soon as they are through only then can they upgrade. If they were to do it now then i'd have to pay full whack. Looks like i'll be waiting for a few months :p

Damn that is a good price.

Possible to give me a mates rate deal? ;) Buuuudddddy? Be my friend plox. Or get your friend to be my friend, so we can have friends being friends.

Would love a package like that for when i move house.
