How long does 50mb take to set up?

I'm moving in to a new rental house soon so just wondering how long I would be without a connection for.

Cheers.

We didn't move house but we did move to VM. If you can get the services and its around your area, it should take about a week. We phoned up and ordered on a Sataday and then the following Friday, it was all set up :D

Just sent off an email to the CEO instead ;)

Got a reply from him saying:
Not a great introduction I'm so sorry. I'm going to ask my office to get in touch to ensure we are at least smooth from here on in.

Got a call from the Executive Office today saying they will try and get the install date I wanted (13th March) :D

I live in Newcastle upon Tyne and this is my current broadband speed with VM at "20Mbps"

this kind of speed is deplorable. I'm due to move house in July and was considering 50Mbps, but if that's the kind of speed i receive, then i don't think i'll bother. Can anyone in the Newcastle area vouch for VM's 50Mbps service?

why did you choose the Aberdeen server?

choosing the Manchester server (which is supposedly my local) causes the test to fail, because it cannot complete the upload section of the test. Aberdeen is the next closest according to speedtest.

EDIT: managed to do a test from Manchester:

a slight improvement in download speed, upload speed is completely unacceptable though.

When I got my service installed I was given a Netgear WNR2000. I had varying issues with it, it would randomly disconnect from the net, cut off wireless devices by getting DHCP all screwed up and general niggles. I called up, and after about 15 minutes of complaining they agreed to send me out a new router. I now have the D-Link DIR-615 and it has been faultless in comparison so it may be worth a shot if you are having similar issues.

The problems with the Netgear router were not specific to firmware either.

Complaining to the CEO does work... they have magically managed to find me the Saturday 13th March slot I wanted :D

Do VM carry reels of network cabling with them? I might try and kindly ask them to make a hole on the outside of my bedroom wall and feed a cable through, so I can connect by wired rather than wireless or powerline ;)

I had emailed the CEO's Office with what I wanted:

I just got a call from one of the senior engineers, and apparently they don't carry network cabling, but will be happy to drill the holes for me. Ahh well, the cable won't cost that much :)

My CM/Router is at the back of the house upstairs in the spare room - Just asked the engineer to run his cable around there

Nah, I want the router and modem in that position because I have the WD TV Live there, and I want to be able to stream HD media from my PC.

Plus we have other wireless and wired devices on the ground floor, so it makes it easier.

I had a terrible installation with VM. The engineer was a total idiot. The telesales woman said he'd put in the cable for the modem anywhere I wanted. I wanted it upstairs. Engineer said "it's wireless, innit?". So I said, fine can I have 3 Wireless N adaptors then for my machines upstairs? He got into such a strop that I almost asked him to leave the house. In the end he cabled it in upstairs but he didn't like it one bit!

Well for me the honeymoon is well over.
I got the 9th tech coming today. Yes that's right 9th

Then it will drop to

There is noise on the line but they insist on sending a muppet to replace my modem again and again.
They have tested the line and found it there is noise on it and it will need a repull BUT they won't do it.

So I am going to ask for some kind of rebate as I know the guy coming today will just replace the modem and go home feeling a job well done

I'm still stuck with rubbish service on my 10mb line. The download suffers horrible ping most of the day and packet loss.

If you're in an oversubscribed area it sucks. Nothing has been done about my problem I've had since late october. I only recently got a date on which a fix date will be announced (so not even a fix date!) and that's 19th mar. By the time it's fixed I'll be moving back home over the summer from this flat at uni, meaning all year I've had this rubbish. Can't game, can't upload photos etc, 50% time pages don't load. It's a joke.

Don't phone, they rarely will be of any use with technical issues. I'd use the support newsgroup, by far the best and can get tecchies out to you in a day or two! The newsgroup is being closed down on 22nd though and moving to the VM support forums instead, so go there after that.

Overall though, I can't recommend you join unless you know the area in which you live isn't oversubscribed. It can be a bit of a postcode lottery sometimes.
