Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Anyone know if there's a way to remotely reboot the actual modem they give you? Both the router and modem are in my housemate's room downstairs, which means that when one of them regularly decides to stop serving properly late at night (read: gaming session), I've only got a 50:50 chance of fixing it without waking him up at 3 in the morning by rebooting the router remotely. Can I log into the modem and actually reboot it?

Cheers

Does anyone have this in the Bristol area ?

particulalry Bedminster (BS3) or Brislington (BS4)

My BT line has given up the ghost (cant call out on it) and my Broadband is currently running at 3mb instead of 8 and BT will only send an engineer out if i agree to a £150 charge if its not there fault.

So im thinking of switching to Virgin. I will have to switch everything to please the Mrs and tout it as a money saving exercise ie Phone broadband and HD TV package.

Ive heard stories about it not being good in certain areas and the re-write your DNS etc.

Im also moving house (hopefully) if the sellers pull there thumb out can I move Virgin once installed or would i need to pay any installation costs again ? I can see the house purchase not completing for another couple of months should i wait or ... ?

cheers for any advice

Not quite BS3/4 - I'm in BS5 and I can not recommend 50Mb enough.
It's always bang on the money (well not always but I think that's my end) and I get full speed down and up.

I have a few friends/co-workers dotted and spotted around Bristol with it and not a single one has a bad thing to say about it.

Got it in fishponds, it's awesome...bar the rubbish hardware.

Ours just got installed, prob won't bother using the adaptor or router as mine are both N already.
So far its rubbish.... it better improve..

Totally different result.
Either way still garbage

On a second try with speedtest

Try different servers, Speedtest can give wildly different results depending on the server you select (IIRC in the London area there is London, Maidenhead, Milton Keynes and Kingstone.

I decided to try the d-link router and adaptor... They didnt work so spent 2 hours on the phone to VM to get it to work...
Phone centres in India.. got disconnected, signal was terrible between us. They just didn't understand etc

Got it to work, and its still going from 10 upwards. max of 29 so far (just now on London, but same on Maidenhead well Maidenhead was 2Mb/s lower. But its not a stable 29 as i can prob run it in 15minutes and it will be like half of that speed so).

Maybe as its new so it won't go to full speed right away. If its still bad tomorrow i will try without wireless and if still bad ring up VM.

Well with 2 computers connected to the wireless (mine and my sisters)
I did a speedtest to london and was getting 47Mb/s :)

But over my wireless using the N adaptor to London im only getting in the 20s so. Kinda pointless then as the wireless needs to be the quick'er' as im the main downloader.

You can log into the D-link remotely to reboot.

My family just recently moved and we signed up for the 50mb package, and weve had no problems so far. Full speed all the time, and no cap by the looks of things

Drexel ! the same drexel that used to own an RX7 ?

Im CraigN who used to have a sierra Cosworth :P

On topic i have just signed up for the 50mb broadband theXL TV package and cheapest phone line.

Got free install free HD box etc had to pay £30 setup for the broadband but i can live with that.
