Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I'm just on the phone to Virgin Media and they're saying 152Mb is only going up to 200Mb and not 300Mb.

They've got a few things wrong during the call however, so I'm not actually sure what to believe. Has anyone else heard anything about the speeds?

Speak to ten people at Virgin, you'll get ten different answers. I'm sure they keep their front line staff a bit clueless so that they don't spill the beans to any customers. Stuff that isn't official yet (like speed upgrades) is especially bad with regards to getting solid info out of VM.

Seemingly so. I've just gone on to another department to sort out some intermittent faults I've been having the last few weeks, and it seems the guy I was speaking to is being given false information from some higher ups.

He was trying to convince me that download is throttled in line with the upload, as they work on a ratio...

Now I've got to wait until 11PM to call back to tell them about my slow speed again.

Nothing to worry about. Phone them up and select the 'leaving VM' option and let them know you want to cancel because you are not happy with the price increase. They should offer you a decent deal there and then

Yep, I managed to get them to knock £12 a month off my bill.

MY connection is beyond ridiculous atm. I'm on the 152mb service and speedtest is currently measuring my download speed at 8mb.

What the hell is going on?

Virgin Media Vivid 200Mbps broadband will be available to customers from October

Virgin Media is to up the speed of its top level broadband to 200Mbps and offer customers the opportunity to upgrade starting on 1 October.
The company has also branded its ultrafast broadband services Vivid. All broadband from 100Mbps and up will be termed Vivid. For example, Vivid 150Mbps and Vivid 200Mbps.
Customers on existing packages will be given the chance to upgrade their speeds through an opt-in program. Those on 50Mbps, 100Mbps or 152Mbps can upgrade to speeds of up to 70Mbps, 150Mbps and 200Mbps respectively.
All speed upgrades will be free to existing customers.
The upgrades will be available to 90 per cent of Virgin Media customers by the end of 2015, the rest by June 2016. The company is also investing £3 billion in connecting four million more homes and businesses around the country to ultrafast broadband speeds.
"Our message is simple: if you want to be certain that you are signing up to true ultrafast broadband speeds of 100Mbps and above, Vivid from Virgin Media is the new standard," said Gregor McNeil, the firm's managing director of consumer.
"The speed of a customer’s broadband connection matters; when you have more you can do more."
The news comes as it was announced that rumoured Vodafone interest in acquiring Virgin Media from parent company Liberty Global has died down.

Press release:

September 29, 2015 02:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Virgin Media today announced a new standard in ultrafast connectivity with the launch of Vivid 200Mbps broadband speed. Vivid will be used to brand all ultrafast broadband speeds and services of 100Mbps and above from Virgin Media.

“Our message is simple: if you want to be certain that you are signing up to true ultrafast broadband speeds of 100Mbps and above, Vivid from Virgin Media is the new standard.”

This week, the Company will start contacting its 4.6 million broadband customers to explain how they can opt-in to an upgrade from 1 October 2015. Customers do not need to take any further action right now. This is the third time the company has boosted customer broadband speeds in five years, quadrupling the fastest speeds available from 50Mbps in 2010 to Vivid 200Mbps in 2015. With Vivid 200Mbps customers can download an entire two hour HD movie in three minutes two seconds and a music album in just three seconds.

Upgrading the nation to next generation of connectivity

Virgin Media is rewarding its existing broadband customers by offering them the chance to upgrade from existing speeds of (up to) 50Mbps, 100Mbps and 152Mbps to more powerful speeds of 70Mbps, Vivid 150Mbps and Vivid 200Mbps. By choosing to upgrade, Virgin Media customers on even the lowest available package will receive broadband speeds at the top end of the range available from providers operating on the BT network.

Thanks to its DOCSIS 3 technology, Virgin Media will make available and deploy the superior speeds in record time, with 90% of customers being able to upgrade by the end of 2015.

Virgin Media is investing heavily in its ultrafast network to meet consumer demand. Data usage on the Virgin Media network is currently growing at a rate of 60% every year and if the trend continues data usage will be 10,000% higher by 2025. The company has also embarked on a £3 billion programme to connect four million more homes and businesses to ultrafast broadband speeds

Phoned VM for the 3rd time in 3 days yesterday. Getting 2mb down on 152 package.

Have an engineer coming out on Thursday to "see if they can find the fault". Also nearing the end of my contract so think I may try the "leaving VM" and see what deal I can get for the 200mbps package.

Now sure if it is my SuperHub 2 or the other boxes but my net speed dies a death around 3pm. Evertime I phoned over the weekend they managed after resetting the router remotely to get the speeds back, last night however it made it worse.

It will be a nice having 200mbps but not if I can only get 10mbps down due to being over subcribed.

So along with less of a speed increase than originally reported it turns out there will now be no increase in upload speed :

Old Speed: 50Mbps [3Mbps Upload]
New Speed: 70Mbps [3Mbps Upload]

Old Speed: 100Mbps [6Mbps Upload]
New Speed: 150Mbps [6Mbps Upload]

Old Speed: 152Mbps [12Mbps Upload]
New Speed: 200Mbps [12Mbps Upload]

Virgin have done an about turn and are now saying there will be an upload increase, only for the bottom 2 packages though.

Old Speed: 50Mbps [3Mbps Upload]
New Speed: 70Mbps [5Mbps Upload]

Old Speed: 100Mbps [6Mbps Upload]
New Speed: 150Mbps [10Mbps Upload]

Old Speed: 152Mbps [12Mbps Upload]
New Speed: 200Mbps [12Mbps Upload]
