Virgin Media Discussion Thread

An Asus router will have a lot of features that a new SH won't have. It will have cut-down firmware to make it easier to support and harder for customers to break. Depends what you want to get out of your router.

My new Hub arrived 20 mins ago, unpacked and called the number on the booklet. Removed the old hub, plugged in the new one and now have 200MB, took less than 5 mins :)

I'm using a Asus AC66U so not too bothered about the features on the new hub. It doesn't say anything about returning the old hub?

All I really want is a stable wifi connection and longer range in my house and I do a lot of streaming and the SH can't cope sometimes.

Not sure whether to open the Asus up now, it's just siting here.

What's your views?

Asus routers are usually pretty good, and often take third party firmware (like Merlin) that make it even better.

I can't comment on the SH3, but it's a given that you would expect a newer version of the Superhub to be better than the older ones. Also no one knows when SH3 will be available to customers, so it might be a wait to see one for yourself and then make an informed decision.

If you're cheap and can wait, then wait for the SH3 and see if it suits your needs. If you've got some cash to burn, an Asus is not going to disappoint, and you can always sell it on later.

Couldn't resist, opened the box and set up the Asus and installed Merlin.

Straight away feels more stable and quicker than the SH

Thanks for your advice

The external aerials make a big difference to speed/stability/range of wi-fi. Better processors make a router able to deal with more traffic at higher speeds.

Guys how can i open up port 3659?

i keep getting disconnected from the server in Battlefield:Hardline, then it tells me to make sure this port 3659 (UDP) is open.

ive tried to open it via this guide
http://portforward.com/english/rout...irginMedia/Super_Hub_2/FIFA_14_-_Xbox_One.htm

but it wont let me saying invalid ip address, yet the ip address is my address..or am i doing it wrong?

i just want to play a round without getting bloody kicked. :D

I've been on the 150mb package for a while which I think now is 160mb. I always seem to get 160 with about 10-12mb upload. Ping is always good. I've had problems in the past until I moved onto the top package which at the time went to a different UBR or something like that. For now it seems stable and always fast...except....... youtube.

Bloomin youtube. Something is definitely up there. The latest thing I get is where I click on a video and it sits there for about 5 -10 seconds with a totally black screen not even attempting to load, then suddenly it will start.

Awesome <3 :) :D :p

Upgrade completed here and my Area Reference is 20.

I did the upgrade through My Virgin Media and also confirmed the upgrade over the phone. I also asked and inquired about an upgrade from the Superhub 1 to the Superhub 2 (and/or Superhub 2AC), which they confirmed as a yes.... However it was ALL FREE OF CHARGE!!!! I asked the person on the other end of the phone a few times repeatedly, repeating if it was free or not and they said "yes, it is free of charge because you've been a Virgin Media customer for XX number of years".

I'm chuffed and overly happy about this. :D

The hub will be, but then they will only loan it to you. Look out for the delivery charge on your next bill. That may not be free, and is not the hub itself ie, hub is "free", delivery is not.

Currently waiting for a courier to arrive with the router and TiVo box for the new house. It could be a long wait :/

Hmm, just called VM and enquired about the Superhub 2 that I have, saying I was expecting the Superhub 2ac. This scottish woman I spoke to said the ac is for 200MB customers and that the one I have is fine for up to 100MB customers. She said if I want the ac it's a one off payment of £49.99. I declined. I said to her "so if I upgraded to 200MB you'd send me the ac?" She said no, because the regular superhub 2 I have will still work fine with it.

Gear has arrived.

I received the AC. :) Had to activate through IE as the page wouldn't open in Chrome.

Looks good though, straight into the router.

Through my phone isn't bad either.
