Virgin Media Discussion Thread

i guess everybody has they own way

but tbh I've never had issues with speedtest.net, it's always gave me proper readings, which are the same as my VM samknows readings

Well speedtest showed 70mb/s but steam downloaded at about 20 megabytes/s and at 25 megabytes/s when speedtest was showing 190+ mb/s. So speedtest is a bit naff for my real world results LOL.

are you getting confused about MB and Mb?

25MB is 200Mb ... 20MB is 160Mb

also i remember that afew years ago some firewall/AV programs effected the speedtest result.

no I'm not confused LOL. Speedtest shows results in megabits and Steam is megabytes, so 70 megabits doesn't equal 20 megabytes Steam was downloading at.

ok. i just didn't understand when you said "at 25 megabytes/s when speedtest was showing 190+ mb/s"

never mind

anyway i downloaded a game which i was getting 27.6MB which is what i get on speedtest 220Mb

Speedtest and others are naff, the 30 second test they do can not compare to downloading multiple files for hours on end to show the sustained transfer rate. I use DU Meter to show my speeds, I'm sure its pretty accurate

I had VM installed on 27 May, so I'm really not happy about the price increase. I've barely been with them for 4 months! Is there any comeback for this? If I phone up and complain are they likely to give me anything?

I got 6 months free Netflix, perhaps they could extend that.. Or give me one of the new 4K boxes? I flippin' hate the TiVo.

On the subject of the new box, how does that work for existing customers? Will we be able to get it? For free? For a charge? I'm on the Big Easy with 50mb.

Anyone got any advice for reducing the Virgin Media bill? I have 150meg Broadband only (no TV or phone). In October 2015 the bill rose from £31.50 to £33.25, a 5.5% increase (which I accepted without complaint). I have now recieved a letter through saying it will increase by £2.99 to £36.24, a 9% increase. The guy on the phone said the best he could offer me was £37.25 as I already have a "10% employer discount applied" which would be dropped if he made any changes.

I think they have me over a barrel as I'd be paying about the same for a worse connection with anyone else and that is on a introductuary offer. They are not going to win the customer satisfaction survey with such sharp increases every year.

What Wireless Router for Virgin Media?

So I've got fibre with Virgin Media. Have a suberhub 2 and it's wireless performance has seemed to degrade. Virgin have been useless.

I'm going to disable the wireless channels, and connect a wireless router to provide connectivity to various phones & laptops in the house. My main pc, console and TV are connected via cat5e/cat6.

I want to be able to mount it on the back of the TV cabinet out of sight, I'd prefer if it was white.

Can you recommend a wireless router with good 2.4 and 5Ghz speeds, decent control but doesn't require encyclopedic knowledge to setup?

I was looking at the Ubiquiti UAP-AC-LITE, any good?

Except that it is not a Router it is a Access Point and handles purely WiFi, you would need your Super Hub to do the Routing.

But yes the Ubiquiti make good kit and most people are very satisfied with their purchases from what i have seen.

But as said below in a corner behind the TV is hardly ideal and half the point of the of the AP you mentioned is that it is easily mounted in the optimal position.
