Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Hiding the wireless behind your TV cabinet isn't going to help the signal.

Get it mounted up high and you'll get a better signal. With the illumination switched off they blend in quite well; no worse than a smoke detector.

This will not happen. We haven't got a big house, but the missus is very meticulous and a trunking running up the wall and a white orb saucer would not be acceptable.

The cabinet is an Ikea job, so it's basically cardboard, and I only really need 12meters range at the most. Do we really think signal will be no good for this range? No stone walls and very open plan.

Who can tell? You've just go to experiment with the location.

Whatever you install would be better in free air. A UniFi AP installed with fully concealed cabling is barely noticeable (I assume she allowed you to install smoke alarms?).

The equipment in the TV rack is likely to be more of a problem than the actual rack. TVs for example aren't famous for allowing wireless signals through.

It's a wide rack, around 3.5m. The TV is in the center along with equipment. The unit would be placed offset with no electrical equipment within .5m.

Installation anywhere else is not happening.

Seems no ones arguing with my router choice so I'll give it a go. Will report back in case someone else has a similar project.

And if you are going to add an access point there is no point in disabling the wireless in the SH, just set them both up with the same SSID and password but on different channels and improve the coverage.

Mines still no better in a evening, the fix date is apparently today. Not had the standard message on the forums yet regarding pushing it back.

Still my ADSL fibre is going live tomorrow and hopefully will have a constant connection once again.

Date moved to December...

how long have you've been waiting for them to fix it?

if it's under a year then theres no chance it'll get fix any time soon. they'll just keep moving the date back.

normally it'll take a year and a half to 2 years+ for them to fix an utilization issue

Two month, talking to some neighbours about it the other day who have also moved over to Virgin they've got the same problems in a evening.

Sad really considering they only cabled our estate 6 month ago and pushed it hard regarding you'll get over 200mb which at 6 am I do anytime after and it grinds to a halt.

i would cancel if you have another ISP to go too that offers fibre , because you'll have a very long wait.... trust me, i had to wait 2 years for them to fix my area. they kept moving the date back / making up BS, ETC. i couldn't move to another ISP because none of them offers fibre in my area, only VM

Price rise of about £3.50 beginning in November, that's going to put us up to basically £70pm for 50mg, weekend calls, and whatever the M+ tv package is called these days plus one extra V+ box.

Madness, once we sort the new contract with the LL and know whether we'll be staying another year I'll be phoning them and telling them to stick it unless they can almost half that.

why £70 for that? thats way to high for that package

you should contact VM to get that sorted...

No idea, it was reasonable when we first took it out 3ish years ago but all of their little price hikes has now stuck it firmly in the taking the pee category now. Like I said once I know what's happening with our current place I'll be getting a better price or leaving.

I upgraded to the 200 / 20 Gamer Package last week. Got the SH3 on Friday and installed and setup. I let it do it's thing and then switched it over to modem only mode to use with my N66.

Hadn't actually sat down to properly test anything with a full media streaming / gaming session until last night at which point I realised the connection was dropping out every 15-30 minutes. A quick check showed that it wasn't the N66 but infact the SH3 seemed to keep dropping the connection. Every time I navigated to 192.168.100.1 to try to see what was going on there was simply a white screen saying 'your superhub is updating' or something along those lines. Once that completed, the connection was fine again.

Spoke to VM and their advice was to simply switch it back to Router mode and test it to see if it's any better. This is despite the fact my SH2 has been rock solid and barely dropped out once.

Rang this morning and switched back to the SH2 for the time being and it's back to 'normal' for now.

/edit

Should have read the posts from earlier this month about the Arris thing (facepalm) :p

i suggest dropping down to the normal 200Mb package then, because the gamer package only works with the hub 3

I still seem to be getting 200Mb down and 20Mb up at the moment. The only other thing I read about is the improved ping but this is around 9ms on SpeedTest.

Which bit of it doesn't work out of curiosity?

Forgot to add speedtest:

the sh2 shouldn't be accepting the gaming package config file, hence why VM say that tire need the hub 3..

your very lucky it's still working. I've seen other people upgrade to the gaming package and had to wait till they receive the hub 3..

the gaming package doesn't do anything to the ping... it's just VM false advertise

I just had the same email. I've only got broadband and phone line for my house alarm and it's going to cost me about £55 a month now. Unfortunately I'm still in the first year of my contract with them as I only moved into this place at the start of the year so don't think I'll have any sway on the prices with them yet.
