Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Other than speedtest.net I havn't really found much you can do on it at full speed during peak hours. Half the sites/services cant deliver you that much bandwidth and the rest seem to be pretty heavily traffic shaped by Virgin. It's a cracking service if you have a good use for it but it wont add much to your life if your a casual user.

I find it very good for not noticing other users in the house.

Usage....

Wired:
Bluray player - streaming love film
NAS drive (files been uploaded to my friends house 5 miles away so the 5mb up is usefull)
A pc (read neighbour) who downloads quite a bit and is a heavy internet gamer

Wireless:
iMac (my main computer)
2x iPhones
Kindle
Wii
Laptop

I find with this kind of usage i hardly notice when someone else is using the service. yes it knocks the top end out of the download speeds but it works for me.

If you only have 1 pc connected to the net it's probably not going to set your heart racing. unless speed tests give you a "twitch"

Hmmm what to do:

Currently on 10Mbps, XL TV, M phone paying £49

Do I go to:

20Mbps, XL TV, M phone for £43

or

50Mbps, XL TV, M phone for £59

Now I understand it from rumours that 20Mbps is getting upgraded to 30Mbps in the new year.

Decisions decisions.

I recently upgraded to the 50mb package since I was hitting the download cap daily.

Well worth the extra money and usually get full speed.

I'm now seriously considering this but I've just noticed how hideously expensive it is if you want to keep your BT phone :(

I could be happy with the 10mb package I suppose but I'm not sure what the limits are like on that, why is there a jump from L to XL of £10 but then its only £5 when going XL > XXL :/

Also, how long is the contract period, 12 months?

Yes we are back on a 12 months contract however it's worth it. We used to be on the XL package however it has a cap on all traffic.

The 50mb package only has a cap on P2P traffic.

If your an existing customer your best bet is giving them a call rather than the deals on the website. If your a new customer the deals on the site are pretty good.

I took the plunge today and ordered the XXL BB. Being installed on Monday. Got free installation and activation as well, so only £10 a month extra. Quite pleased with that, and I'm in the increased upload area so should get 5Mb upload. :D :D

What is the XL cap, I can only see the FUP on their website.

It's 7Gb between 10am and 3pm then 3.5Gb between 4pm and 9pm, if you are in an area with the old upload speeds.

is my upload power to high? i was getting 3.8Mb on the normal 50Mb modem but with the super hub i'm getting 2.8Mb.. the download speed is still fine 50Mb~

Upstream Channels

just had a engineer round, he said the power levels are fine, but he didn't look on my pc at the super hub information, so how would he know? also he said they've just did a remote test and everything is fine...

also he said nobody has 5Mb upload yet . and said leicester is still 1.75Mb... then i showed the connection information has it says 5Mb upload and he just basicly said well it means Up to.

what i don't understand is why i was getting 3.8Mb on the normal 50Mb modem but with the super hub i'm getting 2.8Mb..

I was under the impression that 50mb was NOT capped in anyway yet? Someone above said it is... well which is it? I have abused my line durign the day and never seen any capping.

There are new policies in effect but only if your area has had the upgraded upload speed.
