Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Terrible to be honest, all the past online gaming problems are back after only 1 month. VM are having a laugh if they think this is acceptable.

If I downgrade to 10mb does that help with online gaming?
Im still on 10mb and i have no problems what so ever. Yes i keep all my downloads overnight. Dont download anything during day/evening.

If i do upgrade i'll be happy on 20mb line. All these 50mb horror story's are putting me off.

I've got my 100mb booked for next Thursday, although i thought it could be done over the phone they said they have to do a manual install as it's the only way it can be done (im on 50mb just now).
yeah, more BS to ensure you pay for an unnecessary visit i'm sure, heard it before and been ripped off before !

Only benefit is they can test singal levels to the modem, although the off shore "tech support" (and i use the phrase very loosely) says they can do that too, but i would trust them about as far as their english would get them in the east end of london !

Speedtest please. :D
+1

Download several files at once from the VM FTP. It'll be a better test than a speedsite.
+1 .... real world file transfers are always a better way to gauge speed, as Duke says

What about Youtube videos - Do they load a lot faster in comparison to normal ADSL broadband?

No, they're exactly the same with the buffering, you do get the odd one that loads right up.

Theres not much servers that dish out 50mb, but its nice when you hit one :)

YouTube does infact buffer at full 50Mb when there is the option of 720p and above selected. It's one of the few things i adore about my 50Mb line.

(I am indeed, a happy bunny)

good speeds there :) .... give it a whirl downloading some files, grab a few at a time to remove any web-side limitations and use a monitoring widgit or similar to see the constant type of speeds your seeing, but i would guess if your seeing that there, then your likely to get it fairly solid, my speedtest results have always been low, but in real life downloading i see higher

ive been running this for over 12 months now and still rock solid

waiting for the 100mb but won't be in my area until early next year.

only issues i have is streaming HD content and surfing at the same time but i think thats more the router than the service.... waiting for a gigabit router

The superhub is actually a re-branded Netgear CG3302. ;) You can click the link for a data-sheet for the vanilla product. The hardware itself is quite decent, and it's about the size of an 'old' 50 meg modem stood on its side. Not bad considering it's a modem AND router combined. But as ever VM have crippled it somewhat with the firmware.

Future fw updates will make it possible to use the unit in bridge mode (i.e. you can use your own router), and hopefully address some of the issues people have experienced with ping, and 'connection fatigue' (the router chokes and dies - mostly on the upstream - after x GB uploaded or downloaded in a short time).

It's still a decent unit, but could be so much better if they opened up the fw a bit more. Hopefully that'll happen in time. It's a shame we can't Tomato the thing. Now that'd be something! :D

Hi,

Just had 50meg installed, but have been left with just the hub plugged into my previous hub?!?!

No box left, no details.... is that right??

Also, the account is still on 20meg, was told to wait an hour for switch over.

Anyone know how I can connect to the new hub to see its settings?

Thanks

What exactly do you mean by 'just the hub plugged into the previous hub'? Do you mean the 'engineer' has plugged the superhub into your existing modem? If so, that's definitely not right!

You should have a white co-ax cable running into the superhub, and then ethernet and/or wireless connections to your PC(s). There shouldn't be two units, only one.

Sorry... the old modem is gone.... now the co-ax cable is plugged into the new superhub, and then he has plugged my existing netgear hub (supplied originally by virgin) into that.

Right... now logged in 192.168.0.1 with default login details and have changed password... anything worth changing? I re-call seeing some mention to flooding?

Also, I'd prefer just the new superhub, but the co-ax cable is too short. Can I just buy or make a longer one?

I got a great real of cable when the box was deliverered (30MB) and no engineer. Just checked, an at least 20m ethernet cable, 2 co-axial cables with a splitter. We had an extra long co-axial cable when it was originally installed and we routed it a little.

I was under the impression that it wasn't possible to piggyback the routers or perhaps just pass through the superhub. I have a wdnr3700 already which is either equivalent or better apart from no docci 3 (or whatever its called) co-axial connection and it needed a separate cable modem.

Yes, disable the IP Flooding check or you'll have awful packet loss and other speed issues. Log into the superhub, click Advanced Settings (the small link under the three big pictures after you log in), and go to Services (under Content Filtering) and untick the IP Flood Detection box. Hit Apply, and you're done. :)

Not sure what you mean about just using the new superhub and the co-ax being too short. Can't you just get a longer ethernet cable to your PC?
