Virgin Media - great service but they really do test my patience at times. (renewal costs)

Bit of a random question this but i've been having trouble with the Virgin wireless signal in my house (still running a superhub 2) and was wondering whether switching it to modem mode and using a third party router would improve the quality of the signal ?

If so does anyone have any recommendations for a good wireless router to pair up with the superhub 2 ? got about a £100 ish budget
It will do. I did the same although I ended up swapping back after moving house and getting some free wifi boosters from them so the signal would reach futher.

Bit of a faff but it's sorted now. I wish you didn't have to use their modem.

I rang them a few week ago after they wanted to up my 125mb from £29 to £36.

I said I was looking to leave at the end of the contract as I'm trying to cut costs, I managed to negotiate a new 18 month contract for £24 a month. I just told them I could get internet elsewhere for £22 a month. I tried pushing them to £22 but they weren't having it.

It's always worth haggling.

Ah the yearly retentions call dance ...

My bill is going up to £43/month and the lovely gentleman on the other end has just offered me a "loyalty" discount of £2 hahaha

That's so kind of you but please put me through to the real, juicy discount team. Thanks.

It just takes soooo much time.

Update: Had to cancel my contract. Best they could offer was £36. I was paying £27 the previous 18 months so I was looking for that price again or very close to it.
Lets see what happens now I've got my contract end date in December.

Only way to get a proper discount is actually to cancel the contract.

I did the usual dance with them prior to canceling - £53 for phone/TV/500mb broadband - going up to £80 after contract - usual dance back and forward and best they offered was £63.

Called back - cancelled contract for everything, 30 day notice for cut off. 2 days later - call from retentions team, same current package I'm on £42 a month. Thanks - signed back up.

You won't get the good "deals" until you actually cancel the contract. They always phone within a couple of days.

Just done this as the offer from retentions was rubbish. Lets see what happens now.

you'll get a call within 48-72 hours.... You can refuse first offer if you want and let them come back again - but for simplicity I was happy with first offer (nearly 50% discount on the full price) and happy to get it over and done for another 18 months!!

I spent a good 90 minutes doing the retention dance with Virgin yesterday. Currently pay £79 and it's going up to £144 in December. In that we have the M250 broadband package, TNT sports and sky sports.

I said I wanted to keep the package the same and their first reply was 'I can offer you similar, upgrade to M350 for £65/month and give you an O2 sim for £5/month, sound good?' No. I don't need a SIM thanks, but I'll take the £65/month deal if the channels all stay the same. 'This doesn't include TNT or Sky Sports'. Right, so it isn't similar to my package at all.

'But with O2 you get access to early concert tickets and exclusive offers!' No. I don't want a SIM.

'I can offer you your current package for £101/month, BUT if you take an O2 SIM you'll get M350 and it'll be £91.25/month, so let's agree?'

What part of I don't want a ******* SIM do you not understand??

'I can reduce your current package to £86.25/month, that's the best I can offer'. No thanks, I'll cancel then.

'But our service is fantastic and good value for money!' Nope. Cancel it. I'm not paying more than I am now thanks.

'How about if I upgrade your broadband to M350 and keep your current package but for just £92.25/month?' Err.. that's gone up, so no.

'The original price of your package is £130/month, how about as a special day for today only I offer it to you for £86.25, let's go ahead and sign the deal?' £130? Why were you trying to charge me £144 then? You've also already offered that and I said no. I said my final offer is £79/month for the same package but I want M350 as well.

'I understand. I can offer your current package for £76.25/month or upgrade you to M350 for £79.25/month, which would prefer?' FINALLY. We got there in the end. Thanks for wasting an hour and a half of my life trying to squeeze more money out of me you utter shambles. I felt like I needed a nap after that.

Same with all Of them.
I have been with talk talk for years and years now. Probably 6+

Everytime I go to leave they give me a deal. That tbh, I don't understand how they can.

At the moment I'm paying 18 a month for fibre 65.

18 is barely anything over cost is it?

They've been good too. Fixing the few Faults fairly quickly when I've rang up.

I won't go to virgin as its a hassle with changing lines and people on local Facebook group always seem to be having a moan about losing connection.

I spoke to a bloke at Virgin and politely explained that BT were offering me 500mbit for £38, I said I'd prefer to stay with Virgin Media because it was less hassle than cancelling and going with a new ISP, so I now have Virgin Media 500mbit for £38.

Not Virgin Media but I'm going through this stupid dance with a lot of stuff at the moment - for example paying £4.99/m for full works on Now TV after 3 rounds of going through cancelling, same with various entertainment, phone, insurance, etc. contracts where eventually got offered either the same or as low as half what I was paying to stay instead of the large price rise... I think I'm just going to cancel a lot of it in the future though.

I had hell getting it setup at start they kept getting my contract wrong, so was phoning up everyday was infuriating speaking to so many people. You would speak to some jumped up kids at times as well.

Once it been all sorted apart from a few outages I think been pretty gleaming, still don't think it great for online gaming though I'm not convinced.

I'm on 1gb service and looking at some of the deal people got here I'm totally getting ripped off, come renewal I'll be asking for all sky sports etc or goodbye.

Imo the routers they send out are garbage for WiFi. I hardwired all my devices that needed it.

What router are you using I'm hard wired into the hub 5 however I'm not convinced it great for gaming the connection, my friend seems to have stronger connection always with BT Fttc.

Was using a hub 3 until renewal when they sent me a hub 5. Seems fine to me wired, the download speed is always decent anyway but I'm not really a big gamer. When the contract is up I may look at toob broadband, we have it available here now.

Virgin really are one of those companies that need slapping down a peg or two. On the one hand their product, assuming fibre has always been the most reliable for me but their business practices are shady as ****! The reliance on people's lack of knowledge or fear of phoning up to get a better deal is disgusting. The lowest price from speaking with retentions should just be the price from the get go.
